Like the style of drawing. I think someone can tell just from a screenshot what is an anime made from japan. The faces have certain distinct characteristics. The big eyes, the angled jawline, etc. I find it hard to differentiate between anime girls for this reason except for their clothes and hair color. I would think it all started from one person/series since so many cartoonists over there use the same style.

probably You're under Arrest, watched it when a was a very little kid probably 9 or 10 years old.

fell in love with Natsumi and Miyuki which were worke from Studio Deen, which also made Maria-sama ga Miteru, Patlabor, Samurai X, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

u can pretty much tell if Studio Deen has dabbled their design in series as well

it stemmed mainly from Walt Disney. That's where the big expressive eyes came from, and the style evolved from there.

IIRC, it started with Betty Boop, some Japanese artist loved the style and used it in his own drawings for his series...Astroboy.

If you ever wonder about the sword play that shit is like imbedded in Japanese culture. If you watch any of their live action movies it's almost the same as in anime.

Yeah I read somewhere that Astro Boy is what started that whole thing in Japan...but the creator of Astro Boy said he got the idea from, not lying here, Betty Boop.

That means you have Betty Boop to thank for the anime you enjoy today!

when I think of Betty Boop now I think of Drawn Together...ugh

I'll check out an original betty boop clip on youtube. I can see a resemblance from her to Astro Boy.

    Beat me to it!!!

Some people think that it also borrows heavily from early french cartoon drawings that bore similar features found in early WWII anime short films. Mainly lanky features, with biiiiiiig wiiiiiide eyes.

One would think that with Japan being so ethnocentric at the time, they would loathe any outside influence. On the other hand, with morale at an all time low, post War Japan needed something like Astroboy to pick up spirits. And while anti-American sentiment was present, the two governments were trying hard to bridge a gap, so maybe the onset of something like Betty Boop was all that Tezuka needed.

:o, thanks maaaan. I love Japanese history, so when I can share it, I enjoy it even more when other people can take something away from it.

    Cheers.
