I have a 2nd gen macbook and absolutely love it. Now I have my heart set on getting a Mac Pro but after configuring one at the apple store it's gonna be almost $3000 before tax and shipping. Geezus! I know it's 2 quad core processors but the price is almost enough to make my heart stop. Just thought I would voice my opinion.

Try craigslist for a used one. I have a 2 x 2 2.66 GHz one I bought like 2 years ago and it's still wicked fast.

Get all your hard drives and extra ram from 3rd parties like Newegg and OWC.

:mamoru: I configure it with a 500gb hard drive, AirPort and AppleCare and it comes out cheaper that $2799

I'm a supporter of OSX86 systems, I have 2 in my household and am considering building a 3rd as a desktop (the others are one 17" laptop and a dell mini 9) and selling off my 2.33 15" MBP. Still undecided

By the way, I can't decide if I want to replace my iMac 2.4 24" with one or not. I don't know what I would benefit.

The only thing you want to configure it with is an airport, but you are better off buying a refurb and the airport seperately and fitting it yourself.

If you don't really need a Mac Pro you should wait until the new ones come out anyway (probably June), even if you still end up getting one of the current ones.

If you don't need 8 cores and have some technical knowledge then build a Hackintosh.

what they really need is a mid-level mac between the mini and the pro.

right now if you have a monitor, you're stuck between $700 and $3000, which is just ridiculous.

True, but that completely goes against the idea of the iMac.
