Unfortunately they wouldnt let us take any pics. they searched us like we were going on an airplane, metal detector and everything.

People I saw there included : Diego Sanchez, Jeff Glover, Renzo Gracie, Ralph Gracie, Rolls Gracie Jr, Marcelo Garcia, Jacare, Xande Ribeiro, Saulo Ribeiro, Rickson Gracie, Daiju Takase, Shinya Aoki ........ list goes on

This was unlike any grappling competition I've been to. There was one central stage, that was elevated, there were no ropes. The fighters had entrances, there was an announcer. The fighters also wore blue and red belts to symbolize the corners they were from.

I'm not a big fan of Rickson's BJJ school because of the needless rules. At his school you can only wear a white "rickson" gi, etc etc etc.

However, the rules really did make the fights exciting. Almost every fight ended in submission. There were three, three minute rounds, and more points were awarded for submission attemps than for advancing positioning.

My favorite fighters were Jacare (crushed both his opponents with ease) and Shinya Aoki, who finished one opponent with an incredible flying armbar in 20 seconds, and he also finished Cameron Earle with some kind of very fast rolling leglock, it was difficult to see.

Aoki was the underdog to win his division, and had hilarious reactions to winning his fights. He made a samurai sword motion with his arm, like he had just cut down his opponent.

Overall, AWESOME event, only complaint was the time was way too long between fights. But it was my first time seeing world class BJJ and Judo black belts compete.

I went to buy a sandwich and Rickson literally bumped into me and cut in front of me! I shook his hand, and he was a gentleman. He has this suave latin kinda thing going on. Like a ricky ricardo.

Lastly, Kyra Gracie is the hottest BJJ black belt in the world :naughty:

    i didnt see kron

marcelo actually lost! to cameron earle, who later got subbed by aoki

marcelo wouldve won using the traditional bjj point system. he passed guard and got a takedown, thats 5 points

earle took marcleo down once, for 2 points

however, in this tournament, any positional advance was only 1 point, and a close submission attempt scores 3 points i think...

cameron tried a rolling toe hold on marcelo which caused marcelo to have to spin out violently in order to escape. this won cameron the fight.

ah, gotcha. i like watching no gi tourneys more for some reason. i guess because i don't train, i don't understand the intricacies of using the gi

i figured that ribeiro was common, but seeing how there are billions of families that are in MMA/BJJ etc, i wouldn't be surprised if they were related

mmmmm yeah gi is a little weird to watch if you dont train with it. i used to be the same way, i really didnt like it. now I'm about 50/50 between gi and no gi. gi is really artistic, theres a lot more options and its fun to watch how people utilize it. no gi is actually a little bit more athletic and a little less technical

it's kinda like cage vs. ring fighting to me. i tend to like the "simplicity" of not using your environment and rely moreso on your athleticism and pure fighting ability
