Dial down the kicker light. Fill looks fine.

you really think its too much? I was really just screwing around and got somethin I liked. Do you think it should be softer or just less bright?

I'm just using obscure light names... The light from behind the dog, camera left.

I've only read "kicker" light used in ONE lighting tutorial anywhere... sounds kinda stupid. "hair light more from the side" would probably be a sufficient name.... or "hair light 2"

Yeah the light from camera left is a little too harsh. Did you diffuse it at all?

"Kicker light" is a small light that is used to highlight the cheeks and side of the neck. You were correct the first time. A "hair light" is placed above and directly behind the subject, lighting the hair and shoulders.

OIC. In the tutorial I read, the girl had long straight hair and so the kicker light they were using just added more sheen / highlights to her hair instead of lighting up her cheek and neck. Suppose they could have brought it more forward.

You're correct. Long hair will block the effect of a kicker light on the neck and cheek. They were probably simply highlighting her hair. Moving the light farther to one side starts to light too much of the side of the face, spoiling the effect.
