but not at some of their exhorbitant costs:ugh:

I got a bonus in my paycheck, decent enough. So I called up the local camera store just to gauge the cost effectiveness.

    Nikon 70-200/2.8VR in store...$2114+tax!!!! At 8.25% that's $2288.41!!!!

    Amazon's cost? $1899.95 + $25 overnight shipping

    Savings of over $300!!!:eek3:

needless to say I ordered it from Amazon before I left the house this morning...now the wait goes:wtc:.

Why would you feel sorry in not supporting local stores if you know they engage in highway rapery? It's their fault for not moving the merchandise fast enough to lower the cost, have the space for more inventory, paying rent, paying dip shit teenagers who know nothing and read off the box when you ask them something specific....
I understand your sentiment, but really, screw em. Ritz fucked me out of $250 for an SD1100 and I could have got it on amazon for $185 the same day. Nevar again!

I always buy local ... assuming they'll match BH. Most around here will + shipping.

i ordered my 70-200 from adorama too, for $ 1675 shipped back in january.

No local store would even come close. I'd gladly support the local shops if they priced their items competitively.

I saved $400 on my D700. Got it from amazon shipped next day air over my local camera shops best price. I want to support local shops but $400? If they could have gotten close say with in $100 I would have bought it from them.

I think what people realize is that your local store will probably never be as competitive as an online retailer because your overhead in a B&M store is so much more than an online store.

But you need to figure out what is more important to you...convenience or price. Sometimes they're not synonymous but very interchangeable.

The more I think about it, my 70-200 f2.8L IS, Tokina 11-16 and Tamron 17-50 were all purchased locally and price matched. Waiting for shipping ftl.

the biggest reason for supporting local businesses, and I mean this with everything not just photo gear, is convenience and service.

When the item you purchased breaks down or needs cleaning or whatever, you can't always just turn around and send it back to some random store on the internet. You can however walk into your local store and they can fix it for you. This is where they're better than the internet and should be a reason for you to buy local WHEN you can do so. That doesn't mean be stupid and throw away hundreds of dollars just because it's local however.

exactly, my response was more in reference to those who say the stores are highway rapery. Some are, I won't lie, but the price in most are about what online retailers have too but the local stores have to cover their higher costs sometimes.

But yes, it is very nice to be able to take something i've purchased back and have them look at it to make sure I got what I should have. Plus, it's always nice to go in with your body and try different lenses.
