...most people are saying to go with a yugo but the only place that has them locally sells century arms, a company that i haven't heard good reviews about their quality.

what other companies besides century, vector and arsenal are out there? not looking to pay more than $550 once all is said and done.

I think you can get an underfolder stock of a romanian built AK.

the yugo's supposedly have a thicker trunion, almost RPK thickness and a generally better trigger than the romy's from what i've heard.

country of origin doesn't help me with brands, either. :big grin:

Build your own. That is what I will be attempting in a week or so. My Romy kit is scheduled to be delivered on Thursday

If you have any troubles you can always ask the guys on Arfcom. I have had a few questons on there before, and they always seem to be answered.
I even saw a guy selling a mathching Polish underfolder kit for $200 on there tonight

Go with the yugo underfolder in 5.56, that looks like a fun one.

what kind of tools are involved in a build? from the little bit i've read on here it involves having parts pressed into place and possibly welding?

You need a hydraulic press, a drill press, a dremel tool a receiver jig and a few other tools.
The barrel must be pressed out of the front trunion.
Take out all the old rivets.
put the receiver flat in the jig and press that into shape. Only welding it really requires in to wled the rails in.

However if you dont feel up to making your own receiver theres always buying a premade receiver (same rules apply to any receiver)
Then selecting which US made parts you want to finish off the 922r requirements.

3 for the trigger group - required
1 for the receiver - need it anyway
You can replace the gas cylider for an easy one
Also the muzzle brake or a pistol grip

All you need is 6 total US made parts replaced altogether

Most people seem to be happy with the Yugo's, not many other choices on your budget. For $600 you can find some used Chicom folders.

Not sure if anyones selling Romy underfolders, always see fixed and side folders from vendors seen one two underfolders but they were usually converted buy the owner/seller. Not to hard to do get a donor rifle, remove rear trunion fill holes drill for underfolder trunion. stock assembly and trunion usually go for like $99

The tools I'm using for my Polish underfolder build are:

    18v drill
    dremel
    Plyers
    Hammer
    File
A punch to knock out the rivits and barrel pin.

I'm sure I'll end up needing a few more things and I'll probably make something like this http://gunsgutsandgod.com/barreltool.htm to get my barrel in and out.

    Check out this site:
    http://gunsgutsandgod.com/index.htm

Great resource and step-by-step guide to building one.

this place is VERY VERY primitive. their website sucks, their customer service women are very upity and short tempered, they dont give you any details on when they will ship, how much your total is, etc. i had to call back 8-10 times just to get all the information i needed. i would not buy from them again. the fact that they only do mail orders does not help, as well as do not list an email address for contact. very unprofessional IMO, i ordered my yugo from there and will NOT buy from them again.

I'd suggest a Arsenal milled underfolder, one of the nicest AKs I've ever seen but they're almost impossible to find anymore.
