I want to start my own small community for my area, but I see all this stuff about servers etc... I dont know anything about this stuff. If i buy a forum I cant just run it on my computer? or can someone host a server?

you will need a server or hosting account, even a small one will do depending on how big your forum will get.

My friend runs his own little message board for our friends that have moved away and what not via vBulletin. He bought the domain through godaddy and just got their basic hosting. I think it cost him like 5 bucks a month or something like that. Nothing pricey.

vBulletin is easy to setup. Just make sure that it server has mysql and you could be good to go.

i tried their shared hosting, and it turned out to be shit not the service, but their control panel. its a customized cpanel skin and its slow. you need to email them every time you want to add a virtual domain name. their support was good tho.
