So currently, I'm running a D90 with e 18-105 VR. Its a decent lens for most of the stuff I shoot, mainly snapshots of group or family events. But I want to get a second lens for more flexibility.

Can someone explain to me what kind of lenses are intended for what purpose, and examples of the types of shots with different lenses?

    Thanks in advance :h5:

I keep seeing that the 35mm and sometimes 50mm lenses are preferable, but what type of shots are these most useful for? Portraits, landscapes, or just general use?

50mm on a crop body is mainly useful for portraits

what are you looking to get out of a second lens? an 18-105 sounds pretty "flexible" already..
