I've been shooting pistols for a while now and now I am ready for my next firearm. I am really close to buying a 10/22 because of the mods available and the price of the rifle and rounds. But today I was shooting with my friends Kel-Tec something that uses the .223 round. I loved it. The firepower it has is...I guess the right word would be orgasmic? :o Anyway, just the feel of the power that it has is almost enough to keep me from buying a 10/22. So I want to look into bigger rounds.

What rifles would you suggest that I look at?

    (I am a rifle noob)

Do you have a particular price range? Semi-auto probably right?

Sorry. I probably should have mentioned my budget of less than $400. I dont mind having a bolt action either. This will be just for targets and maybe eventually hunting small game. And looking at my budget and suggestions here, it doesnt look too good :o How cheap can I get a Mini 14 for?

Might be able to find a used mini in that range, you'll get better accurcy from the keltec though, mini14 cannt hit the side of a barn if shot from the inside.

Get a 10/22 if you want to be shooting .22lr. I kind of got tired of mine after a few thousand rounds though. I need something with some recoil to it or I just need to stick some upgrades on mine.

You can get a used Mini-14 for less than or around $400 and they do have upgrades you can do to them.

You can also find lever action .30-30 for not that much money either.

Get a Mosin-Nagant... it's one of the most fun guns to shoot, and ammo is dirt cheap if you buy the corrosive stuff.

$400? get a 10/22 and a Mosin Nagant. You can have both for about $300. The .22lr is cheap ammo so you can shoot all day without worrying. The Mosin Nagant could be your power gun, which is pretty fun to shoot. I picked up a m38 for $80 which came with a sling, pouch, and misc tools.

You can even pick up a Savage Arms .17hmr for ~$200 which has better trajectory over the .22lr.

Another fun surplus rifle that is relatively cheap is the SKS. There are lots of different guns that meet your needs. Tell us exactly what you are looking for and we can narrow it down.

    If I had to stay under $400 and a semi-auto i'd probably go with a Saiga/AK var. because I already have a 10/22.

Saiga comes in a variety of caliber flavors too.
    .223
    .308
    7.62x39
    12 gauge and .410 also.

The 12G shotty and the .308 usually stay on the higer side of pricing but the .223 can be had for 300 in some instances.

    Example. Here is a .308 under 400

If not a saiga there are some cheaper AK's out there that will suit most average shooters. Good luck! :)

AH lol. Sorry. I'll go with the SKS then.

I forgot about that shit. I never think of it because I live in a free state. One of the most free I think.

    Open carry FTW!

You can actually get an AK reciever right now in Cali. Reciever made by DCI $55 shipped. All you need is an FFL willing to recieve it. No one in my city would do it. However there a place in LA I know first hand willing to do it.

Ok. I will start reading about Mosins and SKSs also. :hs:

Model 93R17-FV : http://www.savagearms.com/93r17fv.htm Thats a nice looking rifle. How is the .17hrm round compared to a .223? From the numbers it looks to be a smaller round? Less kick to it?

Mosin Nagants are fun to shoot, and cheap...I'm actually trying to find a decent one now. My brother has a mini 30 (same as the mini 14...different caliber) and it also is a great gun.

the .223 and .17hmr are two completely different flavors. .223 is a centerfire cartridge that shoots a .22 caliber projectile around 2,800fps-3,600fps. the .17 is a rimfire cartridge that shoots a .17 caliber bullet in the low 2,000s. .223 is much, much more powerful. the .223 has a range to about 600+ yards. the .17 to about 200.
