I was considering the audigy 2 zs pro because the specs on it looked really good, but i kep hearing a lot of bad things about it. What is a really good soundcard for music playback and game use (preferably with an optical output)?

Turtle Beach Santa Cruz but if you really want the optical out get their Catalina model instead of the Santa Cruz. Both are about $50 off Newegg.

Santa Cruiz is just as bad as the Audigy.

    Go grab an MAudio card.

It is not considered the "best" in anything but being cheap. In fact, the card itself sounds quite poor when compared to a good MAudio card. However, if you wanted the Aud2, then the 710 isn't a bad choice to save some money. They are about equivilant.
