So far I like the idea of the 300 Winmag, 30-06, or the 308.

As far as I can tell, the 300 Winmag is faster and more accurate, but Im no expert. Maybe some hunting bust mostly just some long range target shooting. Any thoughts on it all?

When you say "long range" how long do you mean? 200 yards? 600? 1000?

How much are you willing to spend on a rifle, rings and glass?

Id say 600 yards at most. I dont know of anywhere around here where I could shoot at 1000 :eek3:

As for money...I dont know. Somewhere around $1000? I dont want anything really cheap.

When you're talking long range shootin', $1000 is butt-crack cheap when glass 'n rings are included.

    sako TRG-42 in .338 lap.

too bad the rounds are expensive as hell and the gun alone more than both of my guns combined.

You could do 600yrd with a decent .223 and heavy loads, i wouldn't bother with more than a .308

You could pick up a Savage 10 for ~$500 and then figure *at least* another $800 for optics

Most panzies on the web complain of recoil. I have not shot anything yet, well, besides a 10-guage, that really put a whallop on me. I'm 5'8, 200#. I've put a few rounds downrange with a 300 Winchester Magnum and while it kicked, it wasn't all too bad. Rarely will that rifle be fire more than 20 times in a session due to the fact that ammo costs the price of the first born child.

It amazes me of the people out there who bitch about .308 semi's, such as the HK91, FAL, etc. I'm like, "Suck it up wuss and shoot like a man!"

Even better is the dove "hunter" who says, "I just had to switch to a 20-guage this year because that 12 was killing me."

I don't know anything at all about the accuracy of a 300 winmag. But I do know that .308s will do better groups at long range than a 30-06.

Have you given any thought to a .270? Relatively flat shooting and extremely accurate. I love mine, but haven't had a chance to shoot over 250 yds. with it yet.

    and the scope I'd get would be a Leupold VX-III 4.5-14x40mm or a VX-II 6-18x40mm Adj. Obj.

On a couple occasions I was able to hit a torso-sized blue reflective road sign at about 800 yards with my Enfield No. 4 Mk1 with the ladder sight.

Pretty amazing what an old bolt action can do.

I really need to scope that thing.

300 Winmag is really expensive? Well then what about the 30-06?

$1000 is really not a lot of money when you are talking about a precision rifle.

    Here's my advice:
Buy a Savage 110p (or 10p) in .308. Find a Tasco Super Sniper 10x mildot scope and spend money on some decent rings ($100-150). That will put you around $1000 and you should have a sturdy rifle capable of sub-MOA groups out to 600 yards and beyond.

The reason you should get a .308 is that match ammo is cheaper than most other match rifle rounds and there is PLENTY of ballistics info for just about every load out there already so you won't have to reinvent the wheel. .308 is also easier to shoot than any of the bigger calibers and that means you can shoot longer without feeling like you are getting your ass kicked. People who talk about recoil not mattering are the ones who go out and shoot 5 rounds a month. They will never be good at shooting long ranges. If you take a basic precision rifle/sniper class you will shoot about 400-500 rounds in two days. You will be wishing you had a .308 if you shoot a 30-06 or larger.

That was before he said 600 yards and $1000. I honestly think its a pretty decent setup and it gives the user a lot of options of stocks and glass and with AIs guarantees your sure to get a properly bedded accurate rifle. I'm going to get one done in 308 and I'm attaching a Spec ops II from Gemtech, initially I really wanted a 338 but I've got this suppressor coming so I wanted a nice bolt gun to put it on (it was initially intended to go on my M1A).

But seriously other than price is there something wrong with the setup I recommended?

.270 has never really been known as a long range accuracy caliber, it's great for hunting though, but there are alot better choices if you wanna shoot serious distances.

Plus it's hard enough to find match bullets in .270, let alone factory ammo.

check local shops and shows. I am still kicking myself in the ass. 2 weeks ago I was browsing the paper and found a Weatherby Synthetic in .300wm for 300 bucks with rings and didn't jump on it.
