I want to have the #1 google result for:

Nick Robinson (Currently doesn't list my site at all)
    Nicholas Robinson (currently number 6)
Nicholas j Robinson (currently number 1)

My site, nicholasjrobinson.com, is a wordpress blog and is updated somewhat regularly. I am using the All in One SEO pack plugin, I add lots of keywords and such (Including the above 3 terms), but the only place I get the number 1 hit is for nicholas j robinson, which obviously isn't searched that much. The most important is getting 'Nick Robinson' up in the ranks

I think this should be a very attainable goal since this isn't a crazy search term. I must be doing something very basic incorrectly. I'm reading through SEO Book which is a bit of a mess of a site. I want to use this test case as a way to learn SEO so I can follow up and get other terms ranked highly to my site. This is more about self marketing than trying to make money directly from my site (which I dont think will ever happen)

    Any help?

"Nick Robinson" is only in the meta keywords, which Google ignores as of last year.

You need to get that into the content and titles, if you want it to come up.

As far as Google is concerned, you've completely branded yourself as "Nicholas j Robinson" throughout the site, that's why it's the best performer in search.

Maybe make your title tag "Nicholas j Robinson, aka Nick Robinson" or something like that?

As well as adding it into the content more.

So title tags are a big part of ranking on google? Hmm. I rarely if ever refer to myself in the third person within a blog post. I put it in my keywords of the post though, although that doesn't seem to be doing anything

If I'm not mistaken, <title> is one of the most important factors.

In seriousness, would signing all posts - Nick Robinson help?

    yes

So do that, optimize the title and place your name inside the content a few times but not too much. Personally, I would stick with what the domain says, Nicholas Robinson. Nicholas sounds much more professional than Nick imo and you already hold the #3 spot in my google search for Nicholas Robinson

I agree, and professionally I do go by Nicholas, but I think a lot of people would search for Nick.

Can I update OLD posts and add in the ' - Nick Robinson' or will that not help?

not sure if that would help or not unless you pinged them afterwords. even then I'm not sure.

You might want to to try getting some backlinks with "Nick Robinson" as the anchor text. I see most of your backlinks use "Nicholas J Robinson" or "NJR Concepts"

a backlink is a site that has a link pointing to yours. Without the www you only have one while with using the www you have a decent amount, judging by the following.

Wouldn't that create a duplicate content issue, and spread juice or page rank across all pages, instead of consolidating all to the front page?

Cool site, I managed to get 1 search in but the next one returned "Out of Yahoo quota for today. Total 50,000 queries executed already."

    Any sites similar to this?

buy 100 social bookmarks from some indian and tell them to use a combo of your URL and your name as the anchor text. That's what I did with my name and passed up a guy with a 10 year old site

Fixing the blurb won't help your ranking, but it would be good to get it working for visitors on Google.

It looks like your theme repeats that tag twice, the first one is empty, which is causing the problem.
If you know how to edit php files, open up header.php in your theme directory and look for <meta name="description" content="" />
If you see that line, delete it.
