when you might actually need to shoot something wide open at 1.8 because its dark outside, the AF cant focus for SHIT. just nosily whirrs around endlesslsy. Sure i can try to focus manually, but come on.

does the 50 1.4 focus more accurately than the 1.8?

and please dont suggest the 1.0 or 1.2L. i can only wish i had 1500 bucks to blow on a prime like that.

    canon.

at $200, i might as well just sell the 1.8 and just get a 1.4, assuming it focuses better than the 1.8

    what do you expect?

also your body, which point you use, your technique will all come into play.

30d, center point focus, technique? squeeze * button to focus, then press shutter to fire (i use custom function 3 or whatever it is).

sure seems fine. I aim at edges or something with lines in it, even if it means recomposing slightly. flat objects with a smooth colour are hard.

and yes a 1.4 is going to be better, not only does it focus faster and probably more accurately, 1.4 vs 1.8 will always be letting more light through to the AF sensors.

also if it is too dark, no lens will focus without an assist beam or something.

Too bad DSLRs don't stop down until the shot is actually taken, so shooting wide open has nothing to do with its focusing ability because it always focuses wide open.

All SLR's (auto focus at least...) use the minimum aperture when theyre focusing and will stop down (if you tell it to...) when the picture is actually taken.

Man, Canon people talk so much shit about the 50 1.8 and Nikon people generally say nice things. Weird.
