GUN I thought ammo for the Five-SeveN (5.7x28) was ballistically weaksauce

here we have the Five-SeveN being carried by an Indian anti-terrorism unit (although you can't really see his sidearm), according to THIS thread on the FN forum.

is 5.7x.28 only weak out of a pistol and not the companion P90 submachine-gun (also pictured)?

I just remember that thread where a noob was really set on buying a Five-seveN for a home defense weapon and we were trying to talk him out of it.

If memory serves theres a couple reasons for staying away from the Five-SeveN in that

    1) the ammo has been tamed down from the ammo that was produced initially, this was because of outcry concerning the armor piercing capability as well as danger to police. The smaller powder reservoir would make it a tamer bullet :dunno:
    2) the price of ammo concerning the Five-SeveN is very much higher than the standard 9mm or .40. this would allow someone to use it a lot more often practice wise.
    3) the p90 would provide a longer barrel and therefore a bit more punch, as well as a larger magazine. It fits well within the carbine market a lot better than the Five-SeveN does within the standard pistol market.
    4) i'm sure someone can chime in here, i would assume it has something to do w/ the round's small size and the infamous knock down power or something like that

yeah, I remember someone, might have been market garden, saying he thought it was roughly equivalent to a .22 magnum.

The good ammo has more zing then a .22 mag to get through body armor but the wound cavity leaves alot to be desired.

it was my impression there was special ammo for LE/GOVT only and 'sporting' ammo for civilians

the bad talk is internet rumor- actual ballistic tests show the ammo performs well (seperates from the case, turns sideways)

Everything I've read about 5.7 ballistics say it's marginal - and those are tests of the LE-only rounds.

Kinetic energy of the LE-only 5.7 ammo is comparable to a 9mm round. Kinetic energy isn't everything of course, but the more your round has, the more it can do.

OK, so those Indian anti-terrorists dudes are not stupid for issuing the Five-seveN, particularly with its body armor defeating characteristics.

but for you and me it would be the same old justgetaglock.txt?

i personally think the various LE organisations around the world drank up FN Herstal's kool aid and took the whole 5.7 story a little too seriously

i suppose the 50 round magazine helped and i can see how it may 'handle' better than say a conventional UMP or whatever

I could be wrong, but that looks more like an F2000 than a P90.

And now that I actually read your post, I see you're referencing his sidearm and not rifle :uh:

The ammo they sell to leo/military has a lot more umph to it than the civvie stuff.

Elite Ammunition makes quality defensive rounds that aren't "normal" ballistics of FHN produced 5,7x28

If I was going to carry a FiveseveN or use a PS90 for defense, it would be using their ammo.
