Meh. Nice lens to start with I guess, but the 35 1.8 shits all over it. It's a cheap lens, but people are wanting to buy it for $90-$95. I don't think I'll ever use it again.

Have any of you gotten rid of this lens?

you'll go back to it later than sooner. its inexpensive, and probably wont free up some money for another camera related purchase so keep it.

think of it as a spare body cover

actually I will put it on my cam when I need to sneak my cam in someplace and want it to look smaller

I like my 35mm on a crop much much more than the 50

the 50mm is usually my go to lens, heh I sold my 17-55 2.8 because this lens took up all my shooting.
On my D200, the lens performs great. While the 35 1.8 is a great little lens, I find the distortion up close too be way too much for the majority of tight portraits.

don't you use the 50 1.4 on the d700? for me, the 35 1.8 is like 50 :naughty:

 were you in the main not too long ago shooting off about the 50 1.8? someone in the main has MAJOR hate for this lens

    yeah DX here

LOL. I always have the 17-50 or 11-16 on it in the bag.

yeah agreed. i was just curious if anyone had some out of left-field reason to hold on to the 50 in addition to the 35 1.8

sure it's a lousy $100 lens, but $100 is still $100. $100 in something useful is more efficient in my mind.

i can never find CA on the 35 1.8. i know people say that lens has major issues with it. either I am CA blind or just lucky

I wasn't talking about CA's...I was talking about distortion.

If you were to fill a frame with a persons face with the 35, like you'd frame them with a 50mm, you'd notice their face seems rounder than it should, and their nose will more than likely appear larger than it is.

    It's just unflattering.

oh wow interesting. i will have to look at that. with that lens i usually have them filling the left 1/2 or 1/3 and using 1.8-2.8 for some nice DOF

Even still, you don't want to limit yourself in your primes.

what is it you don't like about the 50mm?

50 on a crop is kind of awkward
slow to focus and the focus in general isn't the best
    pretty soft wide open

I don't know how it's awkward but each to their own.
    On my D200 my 50 1.8 focuses faster than my 35 1.8.

Yeah it's kind of soft wide open, but I prefer to shoot it at f2 -2.2 so it's not too big of a deal.

    got ya

i think i just have a complex with owning stuff i don't use. i just dumped 2 handguns that i never shot. i honestly keep walking the fence on dumping the tokina 11-16 too. i never use it, but i know i'll seriously regret it when i will need it.
