So i started running about 1.5months ago.. started slow with 1 or twice a week 1ish mile runs
but for the past 3week I have really stepped up the game. 3.0 to 4.0 runs about every other day with no problem.
Last Saturday I really push myself and did my best run yet, so feeling good I run sunday too.

BIG MISTAKE! my shins and calfs were killing me on that run!
So I thought i would take a break..
Ran tonight and Fffffffffffuuuuuuu my right shin is fucking killing me!

I'm running on sidewalks and in a very hilly area of our town..

What can I to help curb shin splints? Stretching?

    Thanks OT

Make sure you have good running shoes.

Reverse calf raises helped me out a lot when I used to run daily. Some gyms actually have a reverse calf raise machine, but you can just do them sans weights or on the leg press machine putting your heels on the top of the platform.

EDIT: Or the stuff in the video.

How much do you weight? usually shin splits are caused when some one has too much mass that their shin bones can handle....

From the link i posted since no one clicked it:

a shin splint is a stress reaction in the tibia. In other words, either a precursor to a stress fracture, or a stress fracture itself. Asking your ATC to tape the shin is a waste of time. If the athlete has a planus or cavus foot structure, an orthotic may help. But more often than not, it's a training progression issue. Don't think this is the A.T.'s responsibility alone. Sport appropriate axial loading exercises that increase bone density must be integrated into your workouts. If you're working with female athletes, it's even more important.

If your athlete presents with these symptoms, listen to your ATC. Rest accompanied by non weight bearing exercise (ie stationary bike, pool) is crucial to prevent further damage. Just because these symptoms appear does not mean the end of the season. Manipulation of work/rest and weight bearing/non weight bearing exercise can allow bone remodeling to take place.

    You need rest right now.

Get on a spin bike or swim for the next week and take some time off running.

I hate this but I run on concrete too which is EXTREMELY hard on your shins, knees and hips. Try running on a treadmill sometimes. I can't stand treadmills but I still do it.

Had shin splits as well, invest in some really good shoes (find a local running store) and it will help.

    don't use wraps and braces.

slow it down a bit, you've only been doing this for 6 weeks. it's too soon to be going into 3 and 4 mile runs. stick with 2 mile runs and increase them by 1/4 over time, along with interval runs.

also, i believe that dirt tracks helped me avoid splints when i started going for 6, 8, and 10 mile distances.

I developed them before christmas, I was told it was because of bad shoes and hard surfaces like running indoors.
