I was doing some shooting from the shore of Lake Superior. On my way back to my car, i biffed it on the ice, and pretty much landed on top of my camera bag. Now my 28-135 f/3.5-5.6 is doesn't seem to want to stabilize the image if i'm focusing manually.

both these shots were 30 sec. exposures using a remote shutter release, mirror lock-up, and mounted on a tripod. I was shooting from the top of a hill, with no wind to speak of... slight breeze of 3-4mph (max)

I used Autofocus for this shot. I did pp this one, hence the crop, and didn't bother with the horseshit below.

And i was manual focusing for this one... i've got about 15 shots just as fucked up as this one, all of them manual focus, and taken in the same conditions.

I haven't heard someone say "biffed" in years

Sorry about the lens. At least the 28-135 is affordable.

I thought i had read this somewhere too, but I don't have much experience with long exposure shots either way.

...go by the exif... i stood off to the side and waited for the red light to blink off, hoping no one would pull up and splash their headlights across my gear. I wasn't really paying that much attention to the exposure length.

Regretting like a motherfucker having not dropped the extra $350 on the 4 year deal at best buy :hsd:

At least it still remains functional, i'll just have to work with it's seeming limitation.

At $10 a year, hell yeah it's worth it. Any insurance carriers you'd suggest?

for amatuers, just stick with whoever you have your house/car with. I had state farm and they were fine. usually $10 per 1000

    for pros
hill and ushire or Tom Pickard

the difference is those guys offer full business coverage so it includes liability and error/omission, rental gear . . . usually starts at 500 a year and up depending on needs

looks like the image stabilization was working.

the newer canon IS can sense when it is on a tripod and account for mirror slap. HOWEVER, you should not use IS when doing a long exposure on a tripod. the mechanism can "walk" sometimes and cause blur. thats why you have perfect semi circles, even though it was a 30 second exposure.
