Coast Guard Reserves as a Damage Controlman

    Training Available:

Training to become a Damage Controlman can be accomplished by on-the-job training or by attending Damage Controlman ”A” in Yorktown, VA. In the 13 weeks of DC”A” school, students will have classroom instruction and lab time in each of the following areas: welding; oxy-fuel gas cutting; firefighting; carpentry; plumbing; watertight closure maintenance; chemical, biological, and radiological warfare defense; and shipboard damage control. Advanced training in welding, firefighting, and shipboard damage control procedures are available for DCs assigned to Cutters.

    Qualifications:

To be a DC, you should have an interest in performing construction, repairs, and responding to emergencies. Practical experience or prior training in Welding, Carpentry, Plumbing, and Firefighting is helpful but not required.

Firefighting is the fulltime job I'm looking to get into at home so this looks like it'd be right up that alley, along with getting training in all kinds of other useful areas.

plus maybe less likely to be sent to Iraq, as opposed to if I join the natl guard i'm pretty much guaranteed to head over there.

I always forget about the coast guard, not saying that they don't do some good shit because they do. I just never thought of them as a branch of the military. More like DEA or somthing. :dunno:

Contrary to popular opinion the Coast Guard sees action regularly. While it is not "combat" action, it can still be very intense.

the coasties see alot of action all the time. Even during peace time they are seeing action. Weather its saving lives or drug interdiction. They are alway seeing action.

I think its a great choice.

i'm not so concerned with seeing action right now as i am with being deployed somewhere soon after i sign up.

my newest son is 14 months old and i'm not ready to be shipped off for 11ty months. I can swing 4-6 for basic and tech school but not years.

plus, when i was younger i had thought about going into the coast guard but being a slacker and a teenager, i was having too much fun being irresponsible. I love the water, the beach, pools, diving, boats, whatever. And helicopters.

and that MOS i put in the first post sound EXACTLY like what i want to do: welding; oxy-fuel gas cutting; firefighting; carpentry; plumbing - those are all decent trades to have and the firefighting will work well with my civilian job as a firefighter/emt/paramedic (once i make it to and thru fire academy :x: )

i respect the marines and the marine corps as a whole, i just think a majority of them are insane. at least 9 out of 10 of the marines that i have met in person are not right in the noggin.

During wartime, the Coast Guard is under the department of homeland security, during peacetime it is under dept of transportation. :mamoru:

    1. coast guard basic training is 7 and 1/2 weeks long. 1/3 week is for forming. it's a cross between air force basic and navy basic and in terms of hardness it's more like a more competant air force basic training. second hardest after marines :ugh:

    2. all military personel are required to sign a 8 year contract regardless or whatever circumstance. the 4 years of IRR is meaningless. if you're scared of 4 years of IRR then really... :ugh:

    3. the reason why the coast guard as a waiting list is because as a small force they only have one training camp in new jersey. again... they will give you a firm ship out date. if it's going to be in a couple months okay... :ugh:

    4. and yeah, not everyone is going to be as luck as you. being a picky eater, an only child and having had a good life. who in their right mind would join the military? especially the coast guard. only fucking retards and poor losers join the military. :ugh:

Uh... concerning "dumb" and "Marine" I don't think I could classify a whole group of people in that big of numbers as dumb... Some of the smartest Marines that I've met were Grunts.... and I'm a Tactical Data Network Specialist... hardly "stupid" in any regard.

If I was able to start over from HS graduating time I would definately have gone coast guard. I would either have wanted to be a rescue swimmer, the guys that go on the raids, or a pilot. Being behind a desk most of the day even though the pay is good gets old quick. :hs:

But at 24 and having the expenses I have it's much too late, maybe the reserves just for the action:dunno:
