ive been doing assisted pull ups so far. with 24 lbs assisted i did 5. then i added more weight assist for the other sets cuz i wasnt able to do many more. am i better off just trying to do body weight pulls up even though id only be able to do like 2 or 3 per set...or should i use more weight assist so i can hit 8 or 10 per set? ive only been working out for a month now so im weak but ive gained some weight.

pull ups used to be a bitch for me and I was in the same boat.

i scaled up the assisted pull ups, doing about 5-10 per set, finishing with 1-3 unassisted ones, then doing a final burnout set with assist

now im just doing regular ones ... sticking with it is the most important thing

I did/do a lot of heavy rows and pull downs. I can do about 15-20 pullups for 3 sets now. Not the best but then again I don't weight a buck 90

i used to max 0 body weight pullups... what helped me was probably working on negatives first. jump up to the top position of the pullup and go down SLOW, like 5-10 seconds. do this several times. next week try doing some real pullups and when you can't do anymore, do some more negatives. i can max ~15 bw now

the people i know that were skinny and started out sucking ass at pullups like you do got better just by doing lots of pullups consistently. Even if you have to start with 8 sets of 1. Just do a lot of them. No real magic to it, you'll get better

    if you are super weak:

start off doing chin ups (palms facing you/the ones that use more bi's.. I always get the two names confused). aim for 50 total reps. do them at the beginning of your back day. do as many reps as you can to hit that target in the smallest amount of sets. personally, I wouldn't max out on my first set. fucks with every set that comes after. stop a rep or two shy of failure for each set and you should be good to go for the next one. have a rest period of 60-90 sec max between sets.

once you can do these really easily move on to wide grip pullups and start over with the same idea in mind. or if you are still somehow too weak or if you have shoulder problems do the same set/rep idea but with shoulder width pullups.

seriously man hit the negatives. do a few sets of 10 and you will be so sore you won't believe it

assisted pull-ups are going to be a waste of time at your weight imo

shit when i was 170lbs I could do 22 wide grip pullups (not quite to the chin though)... Now I weigh around 205 and even though I've got a lot more muscle, I can only do 8-10 on a good day. Then again i was doing pullups 3x a week back then and now I only do them once a week.

not slamming the poster above but i've seen a lot of videos on youtube of lighter guys doing tons of pullups and most of the time they don't lower all the way to lockout

i did 15 with strict form though at about 190 so i'm sure 22 at 170 isn't a big deal

    anyway watch your form
