Kept me entertained over the weekend, I think it turned out nicely. First time I've ever worked with woodstain/polyurethane, no idea it took as long as it does to dry :ugh2:

top is before, obviously. I refinished the wood and the metal. My camera doesn't enjoy my shitty indoor lighting so you'll just have to squint a little. The wood is the original stuff that came with it, the grain did odd things the more I sanded it. I think I'm going to order some custom wood from Iornwood. I learned a lot about staining from this and I think it'll go much faster and turn out much nicer next time.

Sanded off the small surface rust and pits on the barrel and receiver, and filled in the dumbass Century import stamps. Color matches the Bulgarian steel mags perfectly, just a dull/flat tone instead of the semi glossy/blued shine they have.

heres pics of the filled in stamps

I forgot to grab some before pics but I'm sure most everyone is familiar with the Century import stamps anyway. The finish on the metal may look a little uneven but its not, its just the oil I got on my hands after lubing it back up during re-assembly got on the exterior and hasn't evaporated.

Looks good dude. I think your wood (no homo) looks good as it is. What'd you refinish the metal with?

I baked on some high temp auto primer (total investment, 3$). seems pretty tough so far. if it doesn't work out I'll sand it off and try that Gunkote stuff.

That stuff is suppose to be pretty good for the money. I'm out of Moly Resin so my next AK build is getting the cheap auto paint treatment.

I figured 3$ vs 60$ it was at least worth a shot. Looks good and as long as it doesn't smell like ass once the barrel heats up I'm happy.

Take a pic of what you used? I need something to refinish my Ishapore.

I got it from Home Depot. I put it on and let it set for about 8 hours, then I baked it for about 30 minutes at 400F and it seems pretty tough. Doesn't scrape off as easily as spraypaint usually does.

I think a lot of the guys on the AKforum.net use Duplicolor engine paint. I've never seen it around here locally, but it's suppose to work good.

I really wish I had money to throw at this right now cause I love the look of the AKM/AK74 style bulged lower front guard, slotted stock and wooden PG.

I've kicked that idea around and decided its more "bling" than I like, but if/when the finish wears to the point of looking shitty from use I'll polish it over painting it.

What do you do to keep it from oxidizing and turning dull grey or rusting?

I keep it in my safe with a golden rod to eliminate the humidity, I also keep a real thin layer of CLP on it.

I really like the way my PSL came out with the RIT dye method. I've been debating on refinish my WASR in the same manner.

    looks sweet :bigthumb:

I have an epic hardon for a PSL/Romak but I have no delusions of paying 800+ for one. I'm going to wait and see if prices come down (or maybe scoop up a used one at a fairer price) or not get one at all :hs:

Do you have any input on the accuracy of the rifle? I'd like to get one and have it double as a hunting rifle for boar/hogs, deer and maybe elk. Would you consider the rifle accurate enough for this? Especially at range (500yd is the max I'd ever be able to use it)

It's basically a long barreled AK, it's no where near the accuracy of a Dragunov. 500 yds.....never shot it that far, but I doubt it would be very accurate.

AIM has them in stock for $699

thats pretty disappointing. maybe I'll end up going the M1 Garand route. Cheaper and seems like its going to be more accurate.
