I know I'm not "the best" but I think my work is pretty good (for the most part) and it's killing me to see what seniors/families are paying the top photographer in my town, and what they're getting in return.... This woman charges around 1k for her top senior package, and gets roughly %75+ of the senior market and 90% of OTAP could take better shots....

I just need to find someway to really get my name out, and show the kids/families that they don't have to settle for stale, boring portraits... I have a few ideas, but any suggestions from some of the seasoned "pro's" on here?

senios like old people or senior like graduating college/ high school? Around my area, so many places have community boards and many business let you stick up a card or flyer or stuff, It is all about name recognition.

oh and that last photo just sucks. Guitar in focus and face is not

seniors like highschool.... we have a couple local boards, but no advertising is allowed in the forums... but they do have a revolving business list... that no one looks at:hs: The problem is it's a very small community (15-20k population) and the town is slowly dying.... but I feel like I should make my start here, get more exposure(and a larger port) Then seek out to move into larger markets.

I think all of her stuff sucks, very flat lighting, and drab washed out colors.... I honestly don't think it will be hard to start cutting into her business.... it's just a matter of the "starting" part.

Find a senior and offer them a free sitting fee in exchange of spreading the word around school. For every referral give them credit toward prints.

Making money in creative fields has never, ever, ever, in the history of everything, ever been about being good.

I meant community boards like actual real non introwebber net boards. Like cork and push pin. I live in an even smaller community of 6,500 people and all the local business have one and most of the time, folks in smaller neighborhoods like to use local places for their needs.

PS - if your community is also its own school district - not only do they need senior photos but they also hire someone for all their sports and such.

the sports, and school photo's are all locked up by a company that's been doing it since my dad was a kid, and they have close ties to the school admins... so it might be tough to get into that section, but it's definitely something I might look into down the road.

And I do plan on making "postcard fliers" and seeing if I can place them in a few businesses.....

    .

It's all in your marketing man..

There's a guy here in phoenix that is one of the most horrible photographers that I know, and he is living high on the hog because he knows how to get his services out... but more importantly, he knows how to get people to look for HIS services.

    Just curious, who is that?

And agreed. Marketing is key. Put your name everywhere you can and be willing to do things that you don't think look great but the parent wants.

Haha.. I don't want to publicly trash the guy by name..

His first name is Justin tho.

He knows he's not that talented (photographically speaking), but holy shit if the dude doesn't know how to market and create a buzz. I've learned a lot from him and it seems to be working pretty damn well. haha.

    networking > advertising.

go into the schools and talk with them, do some quid pro quo
find some of the more popular kids and do it pro bono if they refer others
make sure you offer both traditional and contemporary products and posing styles. the kids might want one thing but grandma might want a big canvas print
