Before I state my problem, I suppose I kinda have to give you some details about myself...

    Im 17 y.o
    Male
    6'2"
    about 215 pounds...

In all honesty I look like one of the contestants from The Biggest Loser from like week 7 or 8. Idk if that helps paint a picture, but o well.

The Problem: Ive been running 1.5 miles every morning about the same time everyday (except Saturdays and Sunday), but I seem to keep losing endurance and at the same time I'm gaining some speed.

I have to slow down to the point of a slow jog after I run 3/4ths of a mile, and it makes me lose alot of confidence till I just stop. I can't seem to find a medium speed for my run, so thats part of the problem...

What can I do different to make me get back to my 1.5 and keep the speed?... What exercises/activities can I do to help me with this... Any help would be great.

harden the fuck up usually works

if your not eating enough to maintain your activity level you should expect performance decreases

Running and really pushing yourself requires a lot of mental discipline. Harden up man.

are you having shortness of breath?

athletic asthma is a possibility but unlikely.
the previous posts in this thread are probably right

first question is why are you running? There are better avenues for weight loss that are far less demanding for a beginner...

Do you bring an MP3 player or anything with you? You've got to get your mind off the pain of the run and focus more on controlling your breathing / enjoying yourself

If you're not stretching before and after you should try doing that. Well stretched muscles recieve oxygen better than unstretched. That really helps with conditioning... it's better to run faster anyway though. I think there's something about high intensity training on here right?

I wouldn't have somebody who is a self described fat shit beginner doing any type of HIIT running unless you want his knees to explode and his heart to jump out of his chest.

    this.
you need to be in shape to really get anything out of HIIT.

he first needs to get used to maintaining a high heart rate.

if he does 2 sprints at 80-90% his workout will be over.

Harden the fuck up... Sounds like that's the problem, but how...

I'm running because in 2 months I'm going into the marines. I'm also not exactly a beginner. I need to be able to run a 1.5 in less than 13 minutes. The last time I tested (3 weeks ago) I ran 1.5 in 15 minutes.

Yuh, I do listen to music. I think thats also part of the problem though. I think listening to music has made me run faster w/o me actually realizing it. Idk if that would be it though...

sounds like you need to learn to pace yourself then. Somebody once posted a website here that helped you find songs with a certain BPM that would help runners keep their pace, I don't remember the name though. You could look into that, but when it comes to the marines, you won't have the luxury of a mp3 player. Maybe get some marine running cadences and put them on your mp3 player?

I could give that a shot. That BPM music thing sounds kinda cool too. Lemme know if you manage to come across it again...

To be really good at running, to get the really low times, you just have to overcome that mental block. If you feel like you're going to die, are too winded to continue, or going to puke, man the fuck up and keep running. Seriously.

I was trying really hard a couple of months ago to do 2 miles in 13:26 which would consitute a 100 on the running portion of the Army Physical Fitness Test (I'm not enlisted or anything; I just think it's a cool benchmark to work for). It was a fucking bitch, and I had to stop running for a couple weeks and lost it all, but I was in the 13:20s for a while. It was badass.

    Meh, poor. Working on it.

Yuh, pretty much. I was actually forced into the marines in way. I wanted to go Army, but the marines just bugged me nonstop and got me to sign everything. So I just said fuck it, why not. I'm thinkin of switching to Army though.

    Lol.

I don't run, but when I bike, I download some free podcasts and load them on my zune. Here are some websites for free podcasts:

    http://www.djsteveboy.com/podrunner.html

    http://jogtunes.com/jti/jtcpodcast.php

    http://www.run2r.com/

Aside from pacing, I've found that nutrition has helped 500% with my endurance and ability to go at a faster pace for the same distances with both biking and walking. I visited a dietician to get a personalized eating plan set up for me. It's one of the best things I've ever done.

However, I'm sure that many people on here and/or research can help you with your diet if you can't a afford/don't want to go to a dietician.

Nah, not really. I was thinking about going into the military for awhile now. It's just the marines were the first to get a hold of me and practically gave me a bj to join.

Thanks for the idea. As for diet/nutrition... I can't really afford to eat healthy atm. My mom is a dumbass and wastes all the money on like hotpockets and shit... =/

    :dunno:
