My mom recently bought a Winchester 1300 Marine to keep onboard the new yacht her and my stepdad are refitting. Problem is, her shoulders are very, very injured (scar tissue and whatnot). When I brought this up to her with regards to going to the range, she said, "Well I figured I would just practice shooting from the hip."

I made the :ugh: face, but what is OT's advice regarding this? How can she handle a 12-gauge with hosed-up shoulders?

knox stock with a recoil pad on top of it. low recoil shells. There isn't much you can really do with a 12 gauge. It's going to be much more brutal than say an AK or AR or similar rifle.

Consider a 20 gauge Mossberg for her with the Knoxx and low recoil buck, like Snake said, taming a 12 gauge is not for the weak of heart, or shoulder, in this case.

Think a sling might do anything to help?

Help carry it around, yes. Help stabilize for shooting, no.

Your only real options to keep from destroying her shoulders:

    Knoxx SpecOps
    Vang Comp comp job
    Limbsaver Recoil pad
    Low Recoil 00 buck.

Truth be told, I have two out of the four, and I doubt that the other two could seriously tame the 12 gauge.

I'd look for a youth model Mossberg 500 in 20G. They're frighteningly inexpensive.

Keep the 12 for Dad, and the 20 for Mom.

I would say on a yacht you are very unlikely to be shooting for any degree of distance so I bet she would do fine from the hip. I have shot that way before and it's not hard to hit something... I'm not saying I would make a habit of it, def not for hunting, but in close quarters it's a helluva lot easier to swing around that way, much more agile. just my .02....

But yes, 20g youth models FTW! I was looking at getting one for my sister to keep in the house. I found the Ithaca to be one of the best for someone her size (tiny) and for the weight, of course that is counteractive in the recoil dept but we haven't made a decision yet.

See if you can get a limbsaver that bolts on. It really helped tame the recoil in my 870. Then some low recoil and you'll be ok. Have her train with birdshot, combined with the limbsaver it'll kick like a pussycat.

Yep,Have her get a 9mm or something along those lines.Even a rifle in 9mm.If her shoulder is that bad off,a 12g is the wrong path to take.

I tried some low recoil shells a couple days ago and I honestly didn't notice a difference. :dunno:
