Buddy of mine in my band is starting a clothing company and I told him I would look into making an online store for him. I am using XHTML 1.0 Transitional/CSS, but I don't really know where to begin with the code. I haven't created a whole lot of sites and don't know where to start with an online store.

    Suggestions? :hsd:

    ZenCart

Keep in mind that e-commerce sites are not easy or cheap. So don't be too surprised...

And yeah, it's not cheap. Hope the store can pay for itself because you can spend up to $5k a year just to keep it online. Unless you plan on using Yahoo cart or something.

simply curious, is that number including hiring someone to create/maintain the store for you? If you install zencart and buy a theme just to get started, how do you figure $5k a year?

KingToad posted this in another thread not too long ago:

Remove the $4k for design and development, and you get $5k

can't you just use paypal's "add to cart" function? That's free.

I am thinking of going with BigCartel (http://bigcartel.com). The fees are reasonable and the features seem to be what the guy is looking for.

Big Cartel would work and seems to be popular for clothing stores. Looks themeable but I'm not sure how much customization you'll get since the software is ran on their server.

Yeah but you aren't paying anything up front so I would consider it free.

Even with the small fees it doesn't come close to the thousands needed to run your own.

that is if paypal does not freeze your account or what not, and paypal small fees add up really really quick

so it may be free to set up, but i would not totally consider it free

It is by no means an online store...only a payment processor...the major costs in online stores are NOT the processors. it's a good option for small sites with very small amounts of products which don't mind farming out that work...but as a long term solution it sucks.

all i meant was paypal wont cost you anything if you dont make any sales.

i'd hate to spend thousands and then not make any sales.

posted from my phone sorry for any typos
