I'm not a gamer, but I have pc hardware expierence. A friend wants me to build her a PC for her son so he can play BF2 on. Since i dont want to use the recommended hardware from the box, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions as to what to use.

This is what I was thinking

Asus 939socket board, sata, gig lan
    AMD athlon 3800+
    2 gig ram kit
geforce 7800 (dont know what model yet)
    100gb sata hdd, 3 gb/sec 7200rpm
Creative blaster Live! 5.1 pci card
    400 + watt psup
    case with a few fans
    XP pro

what is SLI , do i need that ?

let me know what you think

So far, looks good. You should be able to run BF2 with that easily. For the video card though, I'd recommend the 7900 GT. It costs about the same as the 7800 GT, but gives you 7800 GTX performance (the previous flagship videocard). Google some reviews on the 7900GT. I'm gonna get me one :hsd:

I am going to go with the 7900gtx :o

as for the machine I am planning...

    Gigabyte 3d Aurora Case
AMD Opteron 170 dual core processor
    ASUS A8N32-SLI
    2GB (2x1GB) OCZ Platinum Memory
    OCZ Powerstream 520W PSU
    74GB Raptor (OS & Software)
    300GB Seagate SATA HD (storage)
    NEC 3550A DVD Burner
    X-Fi extreeme music sound card

    :coold:

Waiting for intel to cut dual core prices so AMD follows. :x:

you should not get less than a 500W PSU for any machine containing a video card of today.

    Antec TP 2.0 550w
    OCZ PowerStream 520w
    Seasonic S12 500w or 600w

SLI.. can you afford to have 2 7800 cards?
If so, that's the basic concept. You'll need a board that's SLI ready.

SLI is not necessary yet. Alot of bench marks show single high end cards performing better than average cards in SLI...

I am getting an SLI board to have that possibility in the future, but will not be using SLI to start. check out anandtech forums for some good info about SLI and hardware in general. I've lived their the last month.
