I have a picture assignment from my editor that has to speak for itself without any words whatsoever.

The theme is for the 1st issue of the new year and they need a image that represents new beginnings in Vegas. Has to both say Vegas and a fresh start. They want it to be black and white and candid nothing setup.

I have a couple ideas, one being an Obam change sign in front of the Vegas sign with the CHANGE in focus and the Vegas sign slightly OOF but with ability to know what it is. 1st ever black Prsident with the possible effect it may have on our town.

Another idea i have is an image of the strip with all the new construction in it.

Another idea would try to get a an Image of the old Vegas with the New Vegas in teh background, if its even possible.

    What do you guys think?

What's the background of the magazine and who's it targeted to first?

Those ideas sound ok, but I guess the composition will make or break it. The third seems fairly unlikely unless you've got a super zoom lens and access to some key high rise buildings.

The second idea sounds the best to me. Again, composition will be key. If possible, I would try to capture the geometry of some of the existing buildings with cranes and new construction.

How about a picture of Vegas, with like the storm/dark clouds passing over with the sun shining through if that makes cents

not feelin' the third idea for trying to represent "new beginnings" seems more like a "how far we've come" sorta idea but doesn't give me something new is about to happen feeling.

the obama sign idea is ok, but politics is always touchy, and might be tough to get higher ups in the magazine to bite on the idea.

i think your best bet would be something with all the new construction, probably vdara city center, since thats the center of attention driving on the 15

wait for some douchebag in a rented Lamborghini to wreck it on the strip.

It'll make an awesome picture but probably have nothing to do with your assignment :(

I've always heard that people can gamble all night and then when they go outside they realize it's the morning. Maybe get up real early and find a spot where it's both visible that it's the early AM and people are coming out looking all fucked up from gambling all night?

Aren't there some cabanas near some pools where they have massage tables set up? Get a wide shot of someone getting a massage with a huge resort casino or pool in the background.

I'm sure there are some maintenance crews on some of Vegas' most recognizable landmarks...Find out when they change light bulbs on the strip or clean the bellagio water fountain and take some pictures of them working. Maybe not with a telephoto lens but with a wide angle lens again to really give the magazine viewer a sense of being right there with them.

Pers, I would leave politics out of it, so no Obama signs for me.

I'd find a new highrise construction site mostly complete, pref with some construction cranes up etc.
...and then shoot it into the sun at or just after sunrise.

New construction + dawn of a new day = fresh start.
harmless, can't offend anyone (politically), so it's more saleable to a variety of clients.

Shoot two versions, one where the construction is lit (signage readable/neon lit/etc) and one where its in silhouette, but still identifiable.

Just in case your editors don't want to free advert the construction bldg you chose.

Plus the dark sil will give space to drop some text on top when its printed.

Last note: If its on color, keep the wb cool so its not mistaken as a sunset. Different subtext altogether.
