I dont know what it is really. Maybe I have a small stomach or perhaps I just lack the mental fortitude to put down lots of food but I have always had trouble eating a lot. As long as I can remember I have been unable to finish my meals. I used to feel so hungry and order tons of food at restuarants but after two or three bites I would start to feel full. My mind has always tricked me like that. It still does but now I know that its only tricking me and that I will not be able to finish huge meals so I order less.

I have been working out for several years now and have only made minimal gains. I've come to the conclusion that it is not the effort I put in at the gym its the effort I put in when I'm not at the gym. I'm not eating enough. And it seems no matter what I can't bring myself to continuously eat more. Right now I struggle to get over 2500 calories a day but I burn just about that or more everyday even when I'm not working out.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can train myself to eat more?

Drinks are less filling than solid food. You can eat like you normally do, drink something before bed with lots of water so that you wake up to pee during the night and drink another shake during the night.
Whey + fruits + some fat (olive oil, peanut butter, almond butter). Mix. Drink. Grow.

If it tastes good, go for it.

Calorie dense stuff will be your friend: nut butter, cheese, etc. I take it you're on the skinny side?

I try to eat caloric dense foods but I wondering if anyone has any tricks to expanding your stomach or tricking your mind to let you eat more.

That's an AWESOME drink. Eat 3 regular meals, get a good pre and post-workout nutrition (you could use the same shake but leave out the olive oil, drink half of the shake before, half of the shake after), drink one shake before bed and you're good to go.

Man the fuck up :dunno: it's what I have to do to NOT eat :p It may be uncomfortable, you may not make your goals some days, but you just have to focus and get it done if you want the results.

Stop eating according to how you feel, you have a goal and you should be counting cals. Begin to eat when waking up, stop eating when you've reached you're daily cal intake, it's as simple as that.

Here are a couple of tips:

Eat more meals per day. Just worry about total calories. It's much easier to eat 6x500kcal meals than it is to eat 3x1000kcal meals.

Add olive oil to stuff. 1tbsp is about 120kcal.
Peanut butter - healthy fats and loads of calories too
Blended oats - add it to stuff - blending them means they take up less space in your stomach.
Milk - drink it all day long
Nuts and seeds - sunflower seeds, brazil nuts, almonds etc are all good and very calorie dense.

If you blend or stir up the shake you won't even notice it's there. I was dubious at first too, but it's fine. Obviously if you leave it for ages before drinking, it might re-surface, but if you stir it up good it's fine.

It is a lot of fat, but that's the price you pay because you need more total calories. A gram of fat is 9 calories, whereas carbs and protein are only 4 calories. To quickly increase the amount of calories in a meal, add more fat.

However the fats in the sources I listed are good fats though. The olive oil is good and sunflower seeds/nuts are good. Try to use natural peanut butter without the hydrogenated fats in it.

I dont want to give you a science lesson but you do know that fats are essential, right? Hormone synthesis, making cell membranes, storing vitamins etc etc are all functions of fats. The only ones you want to really avoid are hydrogenated fats and trans fats.
A decent minimum amount of fat per day would be 0.5g of fat for every 1lb that you weigh. So for a 200lb guy, he should eat at least 100g fats a day, preferably from the "good" sources.

we'll I'm about 150 lbs and according to fitday I've already eaten 115g of fat today and I'm only at around 2800 calories. I'd like to be at 5000cal.

Ok good, you're using fitday - thats the best start you can make.

What about the other macros - protein/carbs?

Your best bet is a 1000kcal shake. Have at least 3 a day. Also try to get in 2000kcal by lunch time. If you haven't done that it's horrible trying to catch up. Knowing it's 10pm and you still have to cram in 2000kcal is never a good thing!

You could get away with upping the fat to 200g if you want. It may not be absolutely optimally healthy but if you're working out and keeping active you wont be dropping dead from heart failure and clogged arteries any time soon.

Not too bad. Well, like I said you have to get the total cals up somehow. Best approach is to start early and have lots of smaller meals. Or, if it's possible, try to eat right through the day (i.e. always be snacking on something.)
