One of the project managers I support has been making full daily backups of all of his project data, and I'm about ready to cut his brake lines for it. I've told him there is software available that can back up just the files that have changed, and his response is he doesn't have time to go digging through multiple incremental backups to find the one with the file he needs -- he wants to see everything that was in the project data folder on the day he's going back to. It's a valid point, but I don't know what my options are to make us both happy. 99% of his project data does not change, ever, and does not need to be backed up more than once.

Is there any backup software out there that will backup only changed files, but still show all of the files in the backup set in the condition they were in as of the specified date? There has to be. Suggestions?

Shadow copies does that exact thing. It's avaliable on Vista+ and W2K3

Shadow Copies would work, except that he wants a separate backup that isn't stored on the file server (it's stored on another server with much less storage space), and thus far he's been copying every single file to make backups, so Shadow Copies thinks they've all been changed and stores multiple copies of what is essentially identical data.

Why does he want it separate? You have backups to take care of any loss of data anyway.

This sounds like a case for version control? You could do this with SVN. Even if its binary files, at this scale it would work fine.

I say you had it right in the first post and just cut his brake line.
