Strobist has a list of books they recommend...

I flipped through "Light Science and Magic" on Amazon and looked at "Skin" at a Borders. I also found a handful of other books on portrait lighting mixed in with the 300 other "KOMPLETE DIJITAL FOTO GUIDEBOOK!" at Barnes and Noble.

I'm basically looking for books that will help me practice and guide me along in my exciting journey into off camera lighting as well as being able to tell people how to pose, where to put what, etc, etc.

Also, my 135 f2 finally gets here tomorrow (damn you Saturday for not being a shipping day).

Edit: And not to say that I wasn't impressed with either book, but perhaps there's something better out there. That's why I'm making the thread.

check out "garage glamour" its a book that goes over playboy style lighting. a lot of do's and dont's of glamour shooting. i pretty much read the whole thing is one sitting.

goes over shit like soft boxes, beauty dishes, grids, and such. also what to do with hands, angles on how to make short people not look as short, or how "if a pose look comfortable, it will be a good shot, if the pose looks extremely uncomfortable, it will be a GREAT shot!"

    czech it out.

I actually have an e-book called Lighting the Nude that deals with a lot of that if you're interested. It shows a picture, then it shows a schematic of how all the lighting was set up. It doesn't deal so much with posing and portraits, but there's some pretty cool lighting techniques shown. Shoot me a PM if you're interested.

I'd look more into certain artists than "how-to" books...

Just go trial and error. Find a willing model/subject and practice.

someone asked a similar question on a local board, and one of the responses was "why not make your own"

flip through magazines and cut out stuff you like and put it in a binder. Then you've got it and you didn't pay anything more than the cost of the binder and the magazines...and you can add to it as long as you like

works for makeup, lighting, posing etc
    :dunno:

I don't really have any magazines. Every time I do pick one up though, I usually find myself studying the shots to see if I can figure out how they lit the picture though.

I've been reading through this. It's pretty helpful. Thanks.

Some of the post-processing techniques used in this book really make me :ugh: though. Just not to my tastes I suppose.
