I'm looking at a 2000 Eclipse GT. v6 5spd with just over 94,000 miles. are there any well known issues with the 3rd gen eclipse? anything I should look out for with the higher mileage? if maintained properly, will it go for a few more years?

good luck with that, it is unpredictable. Highly depends on the last owner.

Ya, they are a giant pile of crap. I have heard nothing but complaints about this car. Do yourself a HUGE favor and pick up a second generation eclipse. I'm breaking 11's on the setup I have for my 97 gsx.

if you want a good, reliable daily, don't get a mitusbishi. get a honda.

what is with the generalizations? what are the specific issues with the 3G then?

I've daily driven a Dodge for the past 6 years and have had no issues. Honda isn't the only reliable manufacturer. it depends on the model.

i knew a guy who worked for mitsubishi for over 20 years. the only reason i say "knew" is because he died from cancer. anyways, he told me to never buy anything with the 3 diamond emblem on it, unless it was an evo, because they were the only well made mitsubishi.

i know honda isn't the only reliable manufacturer, but hondas have fucking awesome resale value for when you decide to sell it.

Then pick up a honda or toyota. I've got an integra for a beater for the last 2.5 yrs and all Ive had to replace was the battery and rear brakes. Amazing on gas too.

    Facts.

    No, there is also Toyota.

If that dodge you have is running so good why not keep it?

Resale value isn't a big concern tho, when you are buying a 7 year old car.

In fact, low resale value is a GOOD thing when you benefit from it..

you're making generalizations about the manufacturer. be more specific. if 3rd gen eclipses aren't reliable, tell me why specifically. what issues do they have?

the fucking engine falls apart, the body will start jiggling itself loose, the paint sucks, the interior will start rattling. not reliable means not fucking reliable. do you plan on buying one and fixing every single problem that pops up? if someone (or a bunch of someones) told me that the car i was looking at wasn't reliable, i would move on. so should you and don't fucking worry about specifics.

get a fucking bike. those are reliable.

I don't know any specifics on 3rd gen's as I never once considered one however I owned a 2g eclipse and if you looked at it wrong something went bad.

If you are so set on this car then get it.

You wouldn't be the first person who asked for advice, got it, and then ignored it.

dude.. you haven't done much research on mitsubishis, have you?

I've owned a 2G eclipse GSX, 6 bolt 4g63, intake/exhaust manifolds ported, wiseco pistons and rings, intercooled, etc etc etc, the whole engine was rebult. Running a 16g at 10psi (variable to 20psi). Let me tell you, there was always something fuckin wrong with it, and that was AFTER i put in all the time.

The 3G eclipses are just fuckin lame anyhow. You better be a chick if you're considering getting one. You'll never be taken seriously in it. The eclipse itself is a girl's car, so if you're gonna have one, at least have a fast one. 3Gs are no good.

You asked us a question. At least a few people that have replied have actually owned one, and told you that they're shit for reliability. Why don't you just believe us already? Talking shit back doesn't do you any good. There's a reason they have a reputation. When they're good, they're great, but they're never good for very long.

nobody who actually knows a thing about the car itself is chiming in (at least not above your original post). I consider myself to be a car enthusiast, I know when someone doesn't know what the fuck they are talking about.

who in here has actually owned a 3rd gen? I'm not car illiterate. I can tell when someone doesn't know a damn thing about what they are saying. I hear it all the time. "engine falling apart" and "body jiggling itself loose"...those are phrases that come from someone who is either biased or has no clue and is just BS'ing. no knowledgable person would use those terms. so why would I take that person seriously?

not a single person has mentioned any specific problems that 3rd gens have. do they have glass trannys? leaky HGs? seized water pumps? those are the specifics that I want to know.

I'm a college student on a strict budget. I have no job right now. I can't afford a 30k car at the moment. I want a decent looking sporty car with a manual that is easy on gas and isn't 15 years old. now try and give me a list of options that fit a $5-6k budget. that list isn't very big.

I don't give a shit if it's a "girlie" car. I bet you think a Miata is a girlie car too, don't you? insecure much?

Want a suggestion? Buy an L series Impreza. Those things are GREAT in the snow, easy on the gas, and cheap to fix if you have any problems. Plus you won't look like a woman driving it.
