But could someone that's 185# still grow if the carb instake is:

1 cup oats in the morning
1 cup brown rice after workout
1 cup brown rice before bed?

The rest of the carbs coming from fruit, veggies, and the little in protein shakes?

I really hope you are not implying that you need a calorie surplus to grow muscle.

83g with only the one cup oatmeal in the morning, and 2 cups total brown rice afterworkout.

    31g for a large banana
    11g for ~8 strawberries
6g per 1 cup of broccoli, I eat average of 3-4 cups a day.

    So if I eat:

    1 cup oats
    2 cups rice
    1 banana
    8 strawberries
    3 cups broccoli

That should sit me around 143g carbs a day

you are incorrect, you can gain muscle still by being on a calorie deficit. losing fat by being on a calorie deficit does not mean you cannot consume your everyday protein/carb combo to gain the muscle needed.

No one here, except for maybe a couple, should believe they're going to get lean while gaining additional lean mass. They just don't get their nutritional content correct. Even the guys that are taking additional "supplemention" aren't likely to get leaner while gaining lean mass.

If you are super fat and untrained, the chances you can put on some lean mass while losing fat are much much better than if you're 15% cutting down to 9% and you've been working out for a few years.

Nobody said that it is easier to put on muscle while you are already lean, but none the less it is VERY possible. Alot of people now days bulk up and then go ahead and cut back down, that is there method of gaining muscle. I on the other hand choose to do a sort of clean bulk, thus making it easier to gain muscle but also keeping my body fat percentage low.

that seems a little low... maybe it's the kind of oats you're eating

for 1 cup of uncooked oats, i get 54g carbs
1 cup of uncooked brown rice is well over 100g carbs... but maybe you're talking about cooked rice?

I'd like to know under what basis you're disagreeing with the fact that you need a caloric surplus to cause overall anabolism.

I was looking at the wrong nutrition facts for the oats.

It should be 54g per 1 cup dry oats, that's what I measure then cook it.

So 56g for 2 cups rice and 54g for 1 cup dry oats.

That is 110g plus possibly a banana, 8 berries, and for sure at least 3 cups broccoli

I would guess roughly 159g carbs a day. I weight 185 right now

    :werd:

According to the package 2 cups of the rice is 56g. So along with the oatmeal...should be 110g already.
