This usually happens after a day at work. The drive home is about 30-40mins long with traffic and I always drift off and my biggest fear is getting into an accident.

I am very concerned about this now because today I drifted off and bumped into someone's truck. I woke up in the nick of time and said "oh Sh!t" and braked!! Thankfully, They let it go but my car does have a small scrape and crack in the bumper now :-( but it could have been worse.

Are their any remedies I could do to stop this from happening??
My day usually consists of getting up at 6am, getting ready, eating small breakfeast, then leaving for work around 7:20am. It takes about 30mins to get to work. I get their usually about 7:50 or 8am. I start at 8:30am. I am a teacher so I am moving all day. Finally my day ends at 5:30pm. Sometimes I go over to my parents which is about 5mins away from work. Sometimes I catch a quick catnap and then I leave to head home at 630. I go to bed usually at 1130 or midnight.

    sleep?

midnight to 6am apparently isn't enough for you. easiest/best/quickest/most logical way to fix this is go to bed earlier.

The first order of business would be to adjust your schedule so that you get enough sleep every night. If that doesn't work, you might see a doctor to see if you have a sleeping disorder that makes you drowsy..

Are you on any kind of prescription meds for anything? I'm on some for a couple of physical ailments I have, and a side effect is that I'm always a bit on the tired side.... and sometimes can't even think straight because of it. I have to be careful not to drive within about an hour after taking the meds.

Every agrees - it sucks having to turn in early but your body is telling you that you need more sleep. It may take a little while to be able to go to sleep earlier, but pretty soon you'll be all set.

Also why do you need an hour and a 1/2 to get ready for work? try going to bed at 10:30 and get up at 6:30.

keep the music up really loud and make sure your engaging with it. Otherwise it wont help. Keeping the car cold as opposed to warm also helps you stay awake because then you dont get the comfort of tempature.

Wait....you can stay awake for 8 hours or more of work but you fall asleep on the drive home?? 30 mins is not that long of a drive...seems odd that you simply fall asleep so quickly when you start driving. How do you stay awake all day??

One thing, when driving, do NOT stare at the rotating wheels of other vehicles....that can cause you to get Highway Hypnosis.

Also, as others have said....get more sleep. I used to get up at 6am every day and I'd feel sooo much better when I'd go to bed at 10pm. I didn't tell my friends about it tho cuz they kept calling me grandpa and shit like that....but I just felt soo much better when I was getting a full 8 hrs.

Well, I'm a Pre-K teacher so sometimes when the kids go down for their rest time, I pass out on the floor too next to one of them, haha. I know i would get in trouble if the director saw me, lol, but sometimes i can't help it. Other teachers have taken pics of me alseep. lol.

Then the rest of the day I stay awake because i am constantly busy.

i don't stare at wheels...and 30mins seems like forever, especially when its bumper to bumper traffic and your bored as hell.

as for the other suggestions....I have tried the open window and the loud music but my tolerance for many things is pretty low at the end of the day. I do listen to music but not loudly. And its the winter, I'm not opening my windows when its freezing outside.

I guess the only thing to do is to go to sleep earlier....I could try goin to sleep at 11. Going to sleep at 10pm is just way too early. I've never done that unless i'm sick or something.

Yes, they will find you a sleep specialist and you go to the hospital and sleep all night with leads attached to see if you have any abnormalities, they can follow this up with a multiple sleep latency test next day where you tak 30 min nap every 1 1/2 hours and they determine your level of sleepiness by how long it takes to get to sleep and various stages. Without medication I get to REM in 20 minutes:eek3:

I used to work from 6-2:30 and I know the feeling of 30 minutes seeming like forever. I would stay up till about 11:30 and get up at about 4:30-5 am and head to work.. I would start dozing off my last thirty minutes of work and then on the way home as well..

I started taking naps after work (even though it's a pain in the ass) and that really helped.

Your body is just telling you that you need more sleep. Are you a restless sleeper, or do you normally sleep well? Some people can sleep for 9 hours and seem as though they didn't get more than a half hour because of how restless their night is... Try sleeping a little earlier or taking a short (even thirty minutes) nap after you get home from work, and you'll start to feel better. If you don't start to feel better, I'd say go see a doc.

do you drive on the highway/main roads or some smaller/residential roads

I find that when I drive on the residential/smaller roads, I get bored :dunno:

but yea, more sleep will do you. I have the same schedule as you now and I would fall asleep or start to doze off around lunch (would sleep instead of eat) and I went to bed earlier once, at 9pm, and it made a world of difference. but when you're busy and have a lot of shit to do, going to bed that early really doesn't work :hsd:

It happens when I drive on both actually. I am mostly on main roads. Route 28 and Route 7 in VA. I'm pretty sure u know Rt. 7

But whenever I go with my parents anyway and i'm the passenger, I always fall alseep. Its terrible.

And you are right on the schedule thing....Goin to sleep early like 10 would be good for me but then It pushes everything back that I have to do.
