Now what do I need to buy to start with this...things I have identified:

    1) 512 or 1gb Flash Card (is speed an issue?)
    2) extra battery (how is this worth it to start out?)
    3) more lenses (I am thinking a 50mm prime and something else with some length to it maybe a 70-200mm or something along those lines)
    4) Case
    5) Tripod

Looking on ebay this is my plan...

1 GB SanDisk Ultra II $100
    Nikon AF 50mm f/1.8 $150
    AF-D Sigma 100-300mm $300
    Case $50
    Tripod $100

Is this reasonable....the more I think about it only a retard would buy a lens off ebay. So I am allready rethinking this.

you'll see an incredible difference between a regular CF and a high speed CF. 50mm prime is nice. i'd get a 70-300 instead of 200. nice kill on the "free" camera

I reccommend the fast card as well. I have a lexar 80x 1 gig and I can fill it halfway fast :) shooting in Jpeg large fine quality I can literally shoot forever, because there is no buffer at that speed :) I could shoot it full at 3 fps and the card would swallow them before it bogged down.

If only my girlfriend was like my card :(

Yeah...I am pretty pumped. I have a A95 that I have used for about 2 months that I am going to give to my parents.

Over the last hour I have done research and decided for my initial use I do not need more glass. I am going to stick with the kit and see how that goes. I do think I should get a case though.

What cases do you guys use for SLR's or is it something that is not really used outside of the P&S world?

Get a backpack or a holster :) and get a new strap, the stock one bites (your shoulder).

I use a promaster neoprene thingy, it's like 20 bucks.

hmm...thanks. So my list of things to buy before the camera arrives is now:

    a) backpack
    b) CF Card 80x 1gb
    c) strap

I am going to hold off on the tripod, lenses and battery for now. Should I have a UV filter to protect the lens?

What type of UV filter is useable? Just any 67mm circular?

Do I need a lens cap or does it come with one?

It'll come with a good lens cap, just don't lose it. May as well hold off on the tripod unless you wanna buy 2 or 3 before you're happy. I found a head at cord that I really <3, time for me to start saving..... again :(

Don't forget your circular polarizer filter :run:

also, the pack I've got my eye on is the micro-trekker 200, but I won't NEED it till I get another lens. I'll get it anyway because I'm going to arizona soon, and I'm really sick of dealing with one holster and a tube to juggle 2 lenses, 2 bodies, rolls of film, lens hoods, filters, and all kindsa other crap.

I have a Lowepro bag and its nice but im definitely running out of room. the kit lens will do fine for most projects but once I started taking outdoor photos, i found myself using my 70-300 more than the kit. get a uv filter to protect the lens glass, which is what most people use it for anyways.

I've had my d70 for almost 2 months now and i've only charged the battery twice. it will last you quite some time. and definitely don't forget about the circular polarizer.

Now I just need a compact flash card + a UV filter and I should have everything I need to get started. Then I will have to start thinking about a telephoto lens + a prime + a tripod.
