Got back from Microcenter a couple of hours ago.

They had an overclocked 6600 Conroe build for sale.

    Did 11,000 on 3DMark06.
(yes, they actually had the benchmark saved to the desktop)

    Cost $4,500 though.

But imagine what it would have done if they overclocked the X6800.

my buddy was running a stock (no OC) E6600, 2gb ram and got 14,5xx on 3DMark... of course, that was with an XFX 7950GX2 XXX. ;)

He decided to run 3DMark for me, cause if my old car sells, the above is the system I hope to build.

That was for sure not on 3DMark06 though.

I got 13,000 on 3DMark05 with a pair of single core Opterons and a pair of 7900gt's.

    But 06 is another story.

The 6600 part was a typo on the sign at Microcenter.
I just checked the website, and it's actually an overclocked Extreme edition 6800 Conroe/Core 2 Duo.
That explains the 11,000 benchmark on 3DMark06.

They've got it running with a pair of 150gb Raptors, 2gb of ddr2-800,
and a pair of X1900 XTX cards in crossfire.

Pity that my current computer suits my needs just fine.

Actually, I've started playing EVE Online the past few days. I gotta say, even though it's a couple of years old now, it looks really pretty with its combination of close-up 3D and flat bitmapped backgrounds, all in 32-bit color. It makes my Radeon 9600XT Pro look damn good.

(for those who don't know, 32-bit color is the same as 24-bit color, with the addition of an extra 8 bits to control pixel transparency.)

I'm sure Conroe is fun if you're in the market for a new box, though.

The nice thing about Conroe is that you can get one that beats the am2 FX-62 for just over $300.

I wish I was building a machine right now.

In fact, I just might anyway! :naughty:

6600 should OC to 3.4-3.5 on air. water cooling said to get you 3.8. I'm planning to OC mine a little bit... maybe 3.0 - 3.2. Anything will be a rocket blast past my current system.

Ya, that's the one I meant. And it beats it on most tests without overclocking. But get this, I just saw a review tonight where they overclocked one to 4ghz on air, I shit you not. :eek3:
