My cousin in San Diego is getting married on Saturday (small ceremony/reception with close family) and I asked if they needed a photographer since it's a semi-last minute thing. It turns out they've been looking for a photographer, but none are available so I'm officially the photographer–I'm working for free since they have a very small budget...plus it will be a good experience.

I let them know to expect very little, but that I'd do my best. I think as long as it's documented they'll be happy, but I want to give them some memorable pictures.

That being said here's what I'm working with:

    40D
    Tamron 17-50 2.8
    1 battery
8GB memory card (shooting in RAW, so ~500 pictures)
Courthouse ceremony (I think...I'm going over details with them in a few days)
Everything starts at 2pm in sunny San Diego, so I think my lack of flash (aside from on-board) shouldn't be too big of a setback

I know it's a mess, but I need any and all advice you can throw my way from pic lists, poses, strategy, and anything else you think I might find useful. I'm thinking about renting a lens or two (50mm 1.4, 70-200 F4L), but money is tight right now :hs:. How can I make best use of what I have?

I would plan on ending up with between 1000-1500 pics so you have lots of cull and material.

Take enough memory to cover that, plus contingency.

Yeah, I shoot around 20GB a wedding (ten hour days). I would suggest getting a flash and if you can rent a 70-200 for the weekend...it cant be THAT much. The 70-200 is perfect for candid work

For me I wanted double of anything just in case anything broke.

    I have about 30 Eneloops. 3 SB-600, 2 bodies, 3 EN-EL3e's etc.

    Oh and I now have 2 x's 16GB Extreme III and 2 x's 4GB Extreme IV.

that statement right there tells us you're 100% not ready to shoot a wedding.
    rent the 2.8 with IS.

    I'll probably order this: http://www.adorama.com/IDSCFE38G33X.html

That will leave me with 32gb or roughly 2000 pictures...should be enough.

I'd like to know that as well...no point in taking 32gb of memory cards if the battery runs out after 8gb . I'll probably pick up a spare battery too.

    17-50 + 70-200 or should I try to get a 50mm too?

Of course I'm not 100% ready to shoot a wedding, but not-so-ready photographer > no photographer at all for them.

I'll look into the 2.8 as well.

At least buy a grip, you'll get the extra battery and lay people will think you are pro.

my gripped 40D will take about 600 pics with both batts charged.

If you get the grip, you should still only use one battery so you can have one on the charger all the time. this way you dont run out of juice. but worse case with the grip, throw in some AA's and you are good.

get at least another 4gb card from costco, get a flash, get an extra battery, and have extra batteries for the flash.

The wedding sounds very very very low key, so I wouldn't get too caught up in the details. Just go shoot, have fun, get others to have fun, and learn a few things.

Dude, you realize that a courthouse ceremony lasts like 10 minutes. :hsugh:

I really need to know what the venue is going to be like to see if I even need a telephoto lens. If the ceremony is in the courthouse and the reception is a small family-type thing a tele may not be useful.
