I've owned my Macbook for 1 month. Last night I tried booting from the Mac OS X install CD. I heard a lot of noise and it ejected the cd and now it has circular scratches all over it. I'm afraid to put in another CD. So I set up a mac genius appointment. If they have to replace the drive, can they do it while I wait or will it take days?

it will probably take a few days, they usually don't have the stuff onhand and it might take a couple of hours to replace etc

my macbook got sent in about 5 days after i got it. when i opened the book up for the first time, i noticed flickering pixels on the screen. sometimes they were there, sometimes not. i didn't want to drive 45 mins out to the apple store and have nothing to show, so i called applecare and they sent out a box. about 2 weeks and many calls later i got my macbook. they had moved it up to engineering because they didn't know what was wrong with it, then they finally figured it out, but didn't have the parts. it was the cable for the screen + isight cable that needed replacement, it never needs replacement, so thats why i had to wait. but as soon as they got done, they overnighted it to me, so that was cool. i bet overnighting it cost them like $60

Shit breaks for everyone. No company is 100% accurate.

I had a Gateway that gave me only 1 problem after 3 years and that was the motherboard dying. After that it was problem free (not counting Windows) for the next 3 years until upgrading to my G5.

I'm going on 2 1/2 years on that and I've had no issues aside from some bad RAM from Crucial I put in. They replaced it and, again, no issues. *knocks on wood*.

I dunno why people say Macs are bulletproof.

I had to cancel my appointment because my car was unavailable. I called Applecare and they said even if I brought it to a Mac Genius, they would probably have to mail it in. If I mail it in, will they see if I have any illegally acquired software on my macbook?

They won't waste a bunch of time looking on your hard drive for porn or warez.

Would it be faster to get it fixed by a mac genius or mailing it to applecare?

i also had mine serviced by the genius bar because it wasn't ejecting cds correctly. i had to tilt the whole thing and eject maybe 2 or 3 times before it would squeeze out, scratching the cd in the process.

they just took a screwdriver wrapped in electrical tape and pryed on the opening. worked like a charm
