She's going to teach me how to tone my muscles. No squatting and deadlifting--wouldn't want to hurt my back you know?

I had 5 free sessions so I figured I should use them. The PT I'm seeing is a sport-specific trainer and will help me with plyometrics and what not. I was joking about the part above if you couldn't tell.

I'm curious to see what kind of program the PT will put me on to increase my vertical/explosive speed/agility for the upcoming basketball season.

well considering the fact I work at 24, your first day will be bodyfat testing and measurements along with a overhead squat. She may or may not know her shit. Each trainer at my gym either has a bachelors in exercise science or kineseology or a masters.

Already had my bodyfat tested a few days ago, but it wouldn't hurt to test again. 20.2%...I was at 13% less than 6 months ago :hs:

I can request a different PT if she doesn't know what she's talking about, so what things should I look for?

Use the free stuff, but don't spend a dime of your own money.

I work at Lifetime Fitness (similar to 24 hour fitness) and out of our 12 or so personal trainers at the club I would say that 3 of them actually have worthwhile advice and knowledge that I might consider listening to.

Sadly enough, they have degrees and are certified, and I have experience/read a lot and know just as much as them if not more.

I'm broke right now, so I wouldn't attend additional sessions even if I wanted to. I want to her to teach me what I need to do and then I'll just run with it.

i think it's different when some people get a degree just for a degree - and with that degree comes the job. i'm sure those of us actually interested in fitness read up on it a lot more than those with degrees in some sort of fitness. they just have the degree to back it up and not have their employer seem like they hire just anyone.

i did one of those free sessions at bally's, which came along with my 3 year membership. the dude just made me do core exercises on balls, bands, and other crap. the highest weight i used was 20lbs (on a ball). needless to say, that session was worthless, and was pretty much a sales pitch the whole time. i defintely won't pay $60 a session for that kind of crap again.

I would never use a PT unless they have the look that I want to achieve.

I see most PT's showing people exercises, but never correcting form. They don't pay attention to their client's needs, and for the most part they bullshit about personal shit like what they did that weekend instead of training their client. I rarely ever see a PT that is in shape at my gym either.

im tempted to sign up for some PT sessions just to fuck around with them. hahah. i train at 24hr and i swear ALL the trainers at my club are fuckin useless. the swiss ball and bosu balls are their tools of the trade  i see them with the same clients 1 year after still looking the same. but i guess it goes both ways.

    Speaking of personal trainers....

I'm working at the school gym this summer as a fitness attendant and they are paying for me to get certified. The interview was hilarious, it was these two chicks (one was pretty hot) who were all up on my nuts because I'm a "powerlifter" and none of their PT's know jack shit about actually lifting weight. Not that I do but I BS'ed pretty well.

So, if you start seeing a bunch of n00bs benching 225 in a shirt you can thank me for that.

I lift at a chain called peak fitness and 75% of the trainers actually look the part. It's actually pretty surprising.

Lifetime is kinda half-and-half. There are some trainers there that are in pretty good shape and look the part... But then again, you also have trainers that are skinny-fat, or just plain skinny.

However, the 3 personal trainers that actually looked really good (lean and quite muscular) are no longer there.

during an assesment you can see almost every muscle imbalance a person has during the overhead squat. Then you work with them from there.

while i agree, most of the trainers use nasm which requires a lot of integrated stabilization. YOu do realize that that with these people having to stabilize themselves while doing a movement will burn more calories then not?
