Is it possible to swap a fixed stock on an AR to a collapsable style? Is this legal on a post ban gun? If not could I swap to a pinned collapsable style? The rifle in question was posted in my thread here: http://forums.offtopic.com/showthread.php?t=1018134

As long as your rifle is post-ban you can not put a true collapsable stock. You can have a pinned collapsable stock so taht it doesn't move but looks like teh carbine stock but thats it.

Yep post-ban cannot have the collapsible stock, only pre ban. Hopefully that changes later this year :x: If you just want the look you can buy one of the pinned stocks, looks identical to the collapsibles but is fixed in one position.

Anyone have some recommendations for a quality pinned stock?

I'd get one of the 6 Position PreBan stocks and then Pin it yourself. Just drill through the stock and the rail portion of the buffer tube and use rollpins at the position you want. This way, not only will you be able to set it at the position you use (I prefer 5th position instead of 6th), but also then in September you can just knock the pins out rather then buy another one that collapses. The pinned stocks you see forsale cannot be converted to a collapseable.

i, too, prefer an A1 length stock, and sometime toward the sunset, i'll be buying a Vltor M4-style. the clubfoot is good for prone or bench shooting, because it gives you something to hold onto, but for adjusting, it doesn't like me, because of where the lever is. just my preference.

as far as folding stocks, i have never seen a folding stock for an AR, probably because the buffer tube is inside the stock. it's hard to fold a buffer tube.

Check out Vltor stocks under Stocks and Grips http://www.mstn.biz

Comfortable + storage space = win!

I have been trying to get that clarified also, from what I understand technically as long as you don't have more than 2 of the "evil features" (collapsible stock, bayonet lug, flash hider, etc.) you are fine to have whatever installed.

    The law is...

Detachable magazine and two or more of the following characteristics:

    -Folding or telescoping stock
    -Pistol grip
    -Bayonet mount
    -Flash suppressor, or threads
    -Grenade launcher.

...makes it an assault weapon. That means unless you're going to trade your pistol grip for a collapsable stock, you can't have a collapsable stock.

[Edit: Because I can't spell collapsable sometimes]

    It's not "more then 2", it's "more then 1".

yes its possible, no its not legal.... BUT....

the stupid ban sunsets in september, unless they extend it. The entire time the ban has been in effect I have never heard of anyone getting in trouble because they have a flash supressor or a collapsing stock or a bayonet lug on a post ban rifle. The feds are not gonna come kick in your door if you sneak a few parts onto your rifle.

You can bet you'll feel the pain if you used it defensively though. September can't come soon enough.

that is crazy. it's cool, though. i've never seen those on ARs, but i've seen them for the sig 550's and all their bastard offspring. it's a cool concept, but i'm curious to know how well and reliably that buffer works. and how the recoil is, and how the cyclic rate changes.

ummm. i dont think this is correct.

you are allowed 3 "evil" items. the AR has 3 allready.

    *pistol grip
    *semi auto
    *removable magazine

so please explain how by removing one of thoes you would be able to add two?
