I'm being serious here. I'm not obviously gay (well here it is since you can only go by what I post) IRL and I'm interested in flying planes. Especially since I'm like 10 miles from Whiteman AFB this idea has gotten in my head a bit more lately.

why would you wanting to fly have anything to do with the air force? and why would it concern gays?

if you're really serious about joining the military and you're gay, you best just keep it to yourself.

unless you're flamboyantly gay and get along with people there's no issue. people don't harass you (if they do it's termed sexual harassment and that will be stopped).

will the military boot you out once they do find out you're gay? depends on the unit.

you can start your research here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don't_ask,_don't_tell

then you mentioned you want to fly, if that's your motivation for joining the air force chances are most likely you won't be able to. it's possible to fly rotors in the army and the marine corps, though.

    good luck with your venture.

I would advise against it. I know of a few instances in the Marine Corps where people were "found". One incident involved the homosexual getting beat within a couple inches of his life. Literally. The other involved him getting beat up, robbed and humiliated. Both instances there was no real reprocussion on the people who did the beatings or robbings. And the 2nd homosexual in question wasn't kicked out, they were merely transferred. The first one had to be medically discharged from what the rumors were. The other instances were less severe as higher ranking officiates somehow discovered the homosexuals before the masses did, I am guessing officers, and they were dealt with before anyone could figure out what had happened.

True the Marine Corps may be a bit differenet then the Air Force, but I cant imagine it would be too terribly different. And being homosexual in the military and knowing you are, only leads to a certain amount of time before you are found out.

I've worked for law enforcement on and off since high school and nobody I worked with ever knew until way after I quit and then a few found out due to a horrible break up between me and my ex who was the cheif of police at the time. Everyone took it ok and my friendships witht hem haven't changed except at times if I need help with something now they seem to be a bit overprotective of me. And me flamboyant... not a chance in hell! Those man want to be women guys piss me off.

Thanks for being serious and for the advice! :h5:

 That's true the gays that are based at Whiteman are good looking. But there's 11ty billion more things important then looks. Plus I've kinda sworn off sex and relationships for quite sometime.

Why would I be "found out"? I don't flaunt my sexuality anywhere public, I've promised myself to stay single for at least the next 5 years if not forever, and I could pretty much care less about sex, and I've never done, nor will I ever have a hookup.

The thing is, living in the military is WAY different than working for the PD. You spend just about every single day, every single hour with the guys in your unit. You'll really know them and they will know you. It is likely you could be discovered.

I've seen two guys get booted with a quickness because they were caught checking the oil. There are others I have seen, who are questionable, but no one cares as long as it isn't seen, spoken or heard about. The average AF person couldn't care less what you do or how you feel, so long as they don't hear about how cute some other guy is. I personally feel that gayness is wrong, but does that mean you can't do what I do in the military? No. Am I going to try to get you fired because I dislike your lifestyle? No.
Unless you do something to get caught in the act, or act like a flammer, you shouldn't have much to worry about.

People slip. I dont think any homosexual in the military ever thinks they will be found. But look how many have gotten caught. I am sure a few of them slip through, and should you go through with it, hopefully you will be one of those that dont get caught, but I would not risk it if I was in that situation.

I wonder how the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" rule applies to posting about your sexual orientation on a public web site. :dunno:

I know that for pretty much everything that you can get in trouble for, it is assumed that posting/blogging/talking about it can and will be used against you.

This would apply, except he is not a military member.

yes, but I think the context of this thread is how would it apply if he joined.

about the dont ask dont tell policy, it includes your private(nonmilitary) life as well, if anything from you is found to identify you as a homosexual then you can be discharged from the military, including this thread if you join and it is found/reported a few years from now. Posts on dating websites/newspaper personals can be used against you as well.
