then it appears to stay in standby, but the power light is still on. I get nothing on the screen. Nor does the hard drive light come on at any point. I've tried pressing every key possible to make it work. I tried removing and inserting all possible hardware devices to be sure each device is connected.

Any advice is appreciated. I'm pretty sure the HD may have gone out, but the computer has not been powered on for about a year.

cliffs: I'm a cheap bastard that doesnt want to buy a HD that would probably fix it. :hs:

I'd see if you can test the power supply.

That sounds definitely like a power supply problem. IF it were a hard drive problem, the computer would boot up and tell you the hard drive was missing. Since it isn't, I'm guessing that the power supply is overloading and shutting off.

I'd have to assume the hard drive on this one. I had the same laptop, but never had this problem....had most others, though.
