Looking for suggestions new or used, more likely used. Willing to go a tad over 200 for shipping. I also want something that is going to break me in ammo and I hear 308 fits the bill.

good luck - a used savage 110 or stevens 200 is your best bet though you can maybe find something odd like an old mossberg at a pawn shop. You really need to up your budget.

What about a Turkish Mauser or something. Maybe the ammo would not be so bad if I reload because I wanted a Mauser to begin with but my friend said it would cost a ton for ammo.

two hundred bucks, and you want a .308? I don't think even a Rem 710 is going to go for that little.

Cheap 308? I hope you reload. Also I hope that $200 does not include scope as that is the price of a scope alone...

It does not have to be .308 and I don't want a scope.

Get a Mosin, for $200 you can get the M44 carbine and the 91/30. I believe the bullets they fire are pretty much on par with .308 also, near same size round at least.

You could get your C&R license, a mosin shipped direct from aimsurplus, and over 440 rounds of ammo for less than $200.

    Mosin crew +1

Don't know if you plan to hunt with it, or just go to the range, but you can find surplus ammo pretty cheap, but you can't hunt with it. Hunting ammo is going to be a bit more expensive.

excuse my ignorance, but why couldn't you hunt with it? Granted it isn't the best stuff, but it'll work. At any rate you can get commercial 7.62x54R for hunting if there's some reason you need it.

Is there some law against using a 30 (7.62) caliber rifle when hunting?

anything you would reasonably take down with a 30-06sprng could be done with a .308win.

Swiss K31, bullets are regular .308 for when you reload, super nice rifles, about $200, you can be pretty much positive it'll do 2 moa or better there's an unusually good clamp on scope mount....without a doube your best option.

You can't hunt with surplus, as almost all surplus that i've ever seen is FMJ. In my state, as it is in most states, it is illegal to hunt with FMJ. My state even allows .223, but it must be and "expansion type bullet". FMJ is not. Unless you know of some surplus x54R that is SP, then you can't really use surplus to hunt.

He'll spend 200 bucks on the rifle, then he won't even be able to afford to shoot it.
