ive been getting real close to my 400X5RM on deadlift and last week I had a hard time holding onto the bar(worn down bars + no chalk :wtc: ). I'm starting to throw in some forearm workouts from the archives to help with grip strength, but until my forearms stop lagging....straps it will be. I see no reason in hindering a good deadlift workout because my forearms are lagging behind. :greddy:

I would recomend plate pinches, farmers walks, static dumbell holds (if you have hek head dumbells), and soem rack lockouts, you will benifit more from that than fore arm work.

I just got back from the gym. They did help, but I don't like them at all.

On the plus side, I did get up more reps than normal

Don't use them. I was having trouble with my grip on my 365x5 deadlift. So I bought straps for them, used them for about 3 weeks and decided not too use them anymore. Now I can hold it just fine. Just set it down, regrip and go up, eventually you will be able to hold it without regripping.

FWIW, my gym doesn't allow chalk.

What the hell is the world coming too.

Alright I will admit i met a bar that I can't fathom anyone being able to pick it up without straps.

It was the car deadlift setup they had at the Strongman Comp me and Chris were at. 80 degree weather + fat greasy hands + no knurling and a chrome finish = not going anywhere.

    get liquid chalk

    for the thread starter:

just train grip, the majority of my grip training just came from having wrestled in high school, I pulled 500 with only chalk... >400X5-6 with just chalk... it's not like you can't get your grip higher, no need to cut it out of the equation greatly, don't you want to focus on weak points?

I think the sweaty hands, worn down bars, and lack of chalk make it a little harder, but I'm going to throw in some forearm work and hopefully I can get out of this funk in a short while. I did get up 385x5 for my last 3 sets today after only deadlifting 2 months. :big grin:
