definitely, deadlifts and other heavy pulling motions help those biceps and traps like no other, even if it feels like they're just used isometrically

About a few months ago I stopped doing curls. I was doing 70lb then. I did lots of deads and pull ups for a few months. When I started curling again, I was barely doing 50lb. While heavy back work hits the bis, it's not a substitute for some.

True. When I first started lifting, i did some random split for a week or three, and at that time I was curling 50 x 10 (bar, not db)... Then jumped into westside with some friends that had been lifting much longer than i had, 9 weeks later I started that 5 day split again.. Was curling 70 x 10 or 80 x 6-8, didnt do any direct bicep stuff during westside.

what's wrong with doing both compound and specific exercises. i don't think doing both deadlifts and BB curls is overtraining, unless it's like 10x3 of curls, then 10x3 preacher curls, then 10x3 concentration curls, etc.

i do deadlifts and pullups but i also do BB curls. so? it's exhausting but a workout should be

people seem to be like "no you MUST PICK one or the other!!"

They might be useless depending on your goals. Funny how some people just copy someone else's routine and don't think about their own goals.
