I started to place the order online, but then I gave them a call to make sure they actually had it in stock. She said if I wanted one (of the two that they had left), I'd have to order it over the phone. While I was on the phone (actually about 40 seconds after I called) they sold the last one.

I'll let you all know how it is with samples and stuff. If it gets here early enough on Friday I'll go shoot some swimming with it. I was quite pissed two days ago about how the 30D still has shitty focusing even with the 135 f2, and the 300 2.8 in "low light" (1/1000th ISO 1600 2.8).

It did get here today, along with another battery grip (BG-E2 (non N)) and a battery.

The camera locks focus faster than the 30D, and drives the focus mechanisms in the lenses just as fast as the 1D series.

The LCD is kinda ugly (really needs more pixels). The live view maginification really is useful for critical focusing.

The shutter blackout time and shutter lag seem a little better.

The viewfinder is ever so slightly larger / brighter.

I won't be able to take any fancy shots today, I couldn't get off work. :(

When you have a chance, could you shoot an outdoor (late day) scene shot in RAW + Large JPG at ISO200, then post 100% unprocessed (except RAW conversion) crops of highlight detail areas for both? The deciding factor for me on whether I'll update or wait for the 5D replacement is whether the 14bit makes enough difference to highlight color areas. Bonus if you want to test highlight preservation on the same shot.

    Thanks.

I'll be happy to do it... if it's not raining. Weather forecast for the next 10 days is scattered thunderstorms every day.

I have a 30D.. I've read some of the stuff about the 40D. how the focusing seems faster.. better LCD.. live view..

lemme know if the 40D is a big step up from the 30D.. cause I know the 30D wasn't too much different then the 20D. If so I'm going to sell the 30D and dish out a few hundred bucks more for the 40D

No rush. I've seen some first samples now from the pixel peepers on POTN, and it doesn't look like there is any real tangible improvement in IQ. It's a little different, but it's so subtle that it's really negligible.

Shit, I forgot all about this. I'll do it tomorrow. I'm shooting two VBall matches. One in early morning, other late in the evening.

Only problem now is uploading. I recently lost the webspace I had for the pats 5 years (school provided) so I need to find another convenient place to upload.

From what I've seen so far, the 2 extra bits don't make a large difference... except in file size. 14 MB average RAW size FTL. (largest I currently have is 17MB)

I can however say, that after having shot ~ 1500 pics with it, the focusing really is much better. Not amazing... still not quite as good as the MKII, but close.

This was pushed two stops. Not like you can tell that much from the picture, but the noise levels are marginally better.

Focus was dead-on accurate with the 135, 300, and 85 (so long as they were standing still.... 85 sucks balls for moving objects).

All the lenses I have that focused improperly on the 30D still focus improperly on the 40D... (17-50 front focues, 100-300 front focuses).

These pigtails give me a woodie

40D + 135 is an amazing swimming and diving combo

Cactus (gadgetinfinity) triggers do not work underwater. I had the transmitter on the body trying to fire my flash (with LOS) at the surface of the water, but it never fired. I'm glad that I never tried to build an underwater housing for the flash, because it would have been wasted (no way to fire it).

I grabbed one of the gimpy freshman on deck...

and did some wacky off-camera flash stuff (which is completely impractical during a meet).
