So a few days back my computer started acting up. No new software installs, no new hardware, nothing. The only thing it seemed to coincide with was a switch from 10mb cable broadband to a 20mb service, although I doubt that did anything.

More or less, it takes longer to do basically everything, from start up to transfer files between hard drives to load programs. It'll get hung up on stuff, to the point of 'skipping' on any sound playing, from Windows startup to a steaming video file to a video or mp3 file on the HDD. Right now, transferring some old Top Gears from my C to my D drive is hindering the system to the point that it can't play youtube clips smoothly. CPU usage is sitting between 35 and 60% most of the time now, with spikes up to 100% not being uncommon whenever something's being opened.

I've ran avast 3 times and found essentially nothing (an exploit for java on the first pass, but nothing since), adaware and everything else i can think of. Nothing is overclocked, nothing is changed from it's 'stock' setting on the hardware.

Partial System specs from an old thread on here.

have you tried hijackthis? if not, do it and post the log here

    do this too,....
if you can,... do a system restore. sometimes windows/drivers/application automatic updates can fuck things up.
download ccleaner and clean all the crap (including the registry)
    run chkdsk
    defrag your hdds

if it's failing hardware,... I'd check temps.
i'd test RAM as well, run memtest

Pin down whats using this CPU power in task manager.

The last time something went really slow for no reason on me the hard drives switched to PIO mode, but I see you have sata.

switching to PIO mode is typically a sign of a bad hard drive.. or a failing one.

usually true. But this happened on a dell, and it was a known bug that the IDE controller would randomly switch to PIO. Gay.

Could be a bad drive, but his CPU usage going way up is odd.

CPU usage seems to be back down to the single digits while running winamp, firefox (w/ gmail and OT tabs) and the 'normal' processes. Seems like it was something ccleaner got when i ran it yesterday.

Odd. Hope it stays this way. I'll keep an eye on the system for a bit.

    Thanks for the help. :)

The processor usage will be a little high, but have you checked your video drivers? What version are they?

You didn't by chance install SP3 recently, did you?

Some people are getting slow transfer rates after that.

I've had that for a while.

The fact that the thing was fine, i left for a day, then came back and it was like this is what's really confusing.

    I haven't lately. I'll do that.

The processor usage on the task manager is the only thing I can think to look at easily when the problems start to show up.

edit; installed the newest video drivers, nothing seems to have changed. Seems more like a problem pulling data off the HDD/through the system than with videos in particular.

Ya know, he's got a point. There's a good chance your CPU usage is high because the Jews are using the Internet as a giant supercomputer to predict nuclear fallout so they know where to hide when they bomb Mecca. You don't believe me? Then explain why Intel's processors all have Zionist names.

Those tricky Jews, you never know what they'll come up with next.

I can't even run TF2 main menu without the background music skipping. Let alone trying to actually play the game.

memtest? some way to test for a failing hdd?

Memory Error Detected! Copying between 91e226b and 91e1fc6 did not result in an accurate copy

MemTest has determined that you cannot accurately store data in RAM. You need to fix this.
