Ok here's what happened. I just got a PS3 and I heard that you have to format your external harddrive to FAT32 in order for the PS3 to read it. I've read people recommending using "Partition Magic" to format it into Fat32 from NTFS.

I have a butt load of HD movies already in the harddrive and I didnt want to lose it. Other people said that I can format it into fat32 without losing the files. I didnt know exactly how to do it. So I tried creating a new partition in the harddrive....but while it was trying to create a new fat32 partition, Partition magic crashed!

So I opened up Partition Magic again, and now it's not reading the harddrive right. the name of my harddrive used to be "Mybook" but now it has random characters on it, and also it says that all of the space inside of it is being used, when Im suppose to have 80gb more free space.

I go to "My Computer" and the harddrive isnt showing up on there! :rant2: I tried unplugging the harddrive and replugging it, but my computer still isnt reading it, it's not showing up at all. But when I open up partition magic, it shows on there but with a random name on it. wtf man?!

can someone help me out here?

Did you actually buy Partition Magic or download the free trial legit from a reliable source? If not thats probably your problem.

Oh and also, It does show up in Partition Magic, but I cannot do anything with the harddrive. If I try to create a new partition again, it pops up an error "a new partition could not be created"

If I click on browse to see the files in it, it shows nothing

It's fucked. Also, you can convert from FAT32 to NTFS without erasing the disk, but you can't go the other direction.

Why didn't you just copy the movies onto your computer, reformat the external disk, and put the movies back on? The simplest method is usually the safest method too.

I would've if I had enough room. I only have 80gb in my laptop, but I have over 400gb in this external harddrive :hs:

Should I run a data recovery program and then just reformat the whole drive?

I'll give you a tip (that I think you just learned).... if you are doing something that has the potential to not be undone and/or involves anything that you don't want to loose, don't do it or get the software from a reliable source (ie: not p2p, rapidshare/megashares/etc, etc).

    lesson learned

Its not just that. I rarely bother trying to help someone fix something when the cause of the problem was pirated software. You never know what is going on because of cracks/virus/etc that create instability/performance/etc issues with pirated software. Its usually easier to just take your loss and move on.

With this I would try what Doc suggested (or something similar) and if it doesn't work you can either send your drive off to a data recovery place (professionals) and pay out the ass for (most likely) pirated movies or just give it a fresh format and start over.

    yeah, it's like another dimension.
in the main forum, most will probably laugh at you for paying for software.

the main forum is mostly deadbeats, convicted criminals, potheads, and virgins that are still in school.

here we have at least a few people that get paid for their work.
