My wife insisted on taking the baby to 'the picture people' in the mall and take pictures of him. I told her if she wants to spend money taking his pics, give me the money and I'll get some alien bees and a soft box so we can do it at home.

WTF did I spend all this money for, fun?

Not to mention they were using 20d Canons and kit lenses.

One day when she isn't there, take some pics of the baby, print them, frame them, put on wall.

    Then see what she says

I told her it'd be like me going and buying birthday invites for him and sending them out to people when I know she can do just as good a job and maybe even better.

    But!!...

Youve got to do it the girl way!
Take them, print them, and hang them but only after shes hung the ones shes paid for. So just replace the ones that she got. Then, when she doesnt notice, dont say a single word until youre having a fight! That way, you can bring it up and yell at her for not caring!

    Total score!

or you could take the kids to the picture people, then take pics with your current equipment.

compare 1 vs 2, then whenever you need to justify something like alien bees you're set.

unless you can't pull it off, then you're fucked.

2 bodies, 4 different range lenses, and a speedlight. :dunno:

I'm a nerd when it comes to quality things. I always want the next best thing.
and the only reason I mentioned alien bees is because that's what they used there. I can do it with a white sheet and a shop light and she knows that. I guess just her mention of it made me wonder.

it doesn't matter how big of a super star it is...pretty much every single lens at f/8, f/11, or f/16 (common studio apertures) is going to perform the same. hell...even 50 year old large format lenses are going to out perform all of the canon "superstar" lenses by a shit ton at f/16.

mojito's point is that it's pointless to have a 1200 dollar 50mm f/1.2 in a studio because you're never ever going to use it at f/1.2.

man, some people think they need the highest gear to make great shots. I bet a i can make teh kit lens shine just as good if not better then some people with 24-70Ls or 50 1.2, or 85 1.2L. Shooting in a studio environment pretty much gives you full control over your gear. you can set the f/stop to the sweet spot and then dial the rest in to cater. shit look at Stephen Eastwood's example of Fashion Photography with a Canon g9...
