I was/am a scrawny fuck with no chest muscles, been lifting for a year and a half now and I'm not feeling the way my chest development is going.

My chest is larger but the majority of the mass is on the outside of my pecs, its not that even look throughout.

Does it just take a long time to have that flat look to it?

Is it genetics that determines whether or not your chest develops looking like this?

I think you have a good base, just keep on what you are doing.

allot depends on genetics. You can put mass on your chest based on your diet and exercise, but the good portion of "wide" flat look comes genetics.

Example of the genetic portion maybe easier explained with biceps, if you compress your bicept and your muscle does not extend to the inside of the elbow, then no matter how much weight you push, you will never extend it further.

Dont let this shit deter you though, if you keep at it, eventually the benefits from having a fit chest with solid mass will outwiegh the lack of genetic width.

Plenty of people experience the similar build and through mass and definition get by without the width.

    Here is an example.
Look at this womens competition fitness model, she was not "blessed" with a wide chest...

But makes up for it by adding an ounce or two of lean body mass and gay glasses.

You can do cable flies at various angles, pullovers, wide and narrow grip bench, incline bench, decline bench, flat bench, BB and DB, pushups, and synthol.

    I do most of these.

Looks like you just need to gain more lean mass before worrying about the shape. No point thinking about it at this stage.

that pic is from Aug '06...dont have any more current pics. I have gained mass since then, but it just isn't forming like the pic in my first post.

Even after lifting for 1.5yrs, being as scrawny as I was, it still might be too early for me to worry about it :o

I was 170 in that picture and I am a steady 195-198 currently. Obviously most is probably fat but I've worked hard and been eating a high protein low card diet for 1.5yrs now. I was one of those guys that used to complain I couldn't gain weight b/c of my metabolism...I wasn't working hard enough :o

nope I have worked straight through. However, for the first year I worked out at home. I was just to small and weak and wanted to build up at least a respectable base before joining a gym...and I actually did pretty well at home.

I have been going to an actual gym since probably Aug/Sept of this year. I was able to hit 240 x 1 bench press a month or so ago which shows I wasn't slacking off with "working out at home" like everyone thought I was :o

If you gained 25 lbs over 1.5 years, it should not be mostly fat

I remember reading at most you can do 10-12lbs of lean muscle a year, so I figure I have a good 10-15lbs of fat in there as well.

Your right its probably not mostly fat, but I did gain some fat trust me :hs:
