I sent it in to have a suspension clunk investigated, and to have the valve cover gasket replaced (it's leaking), and the shop calls me back and tells my my strut mounts are shot and there's a half-dozen serious oil leaks around the engine bay. It's like I can't win with this goddamned car.

I should probably sell it while it still runs well, and drop the money on an RX-8.

and my is still chugging along with relatively few flaws :hsd:
make no mistake: if my dad had given me the retail value of my passat (12ish K when he handed it down to me) I would not have gotten one. I probably would have gotten a Jetta 1.8t, granted i would not have had an appreciation of vdubs had he instilled one in me. I dunno what I would've gotten. Hopefully not a camcord :noes:
but all that aside, I kinda like it.

99 B5 here. It's been great to me, but I know your pain. Just got a new driver side control arm, and front pads/rotors. New Cats are on the horizon (Any suggestions? lol)

I love my passat, I think its a great car. It just sucks when stuff goes wrong.:sadwavey:

Trade that shit in and snag a rabbit or something with a warranty.

Bah. They thought the strut mounts might be shot. I told the mechanic to tap lightly on each control arm using a metal hammer, and to listen for a dull thunk instead of a sharp ding, and sure enough, he found a dead control arm.

Also, some of the oil leaks were just hoses with loose clamps, so those are a no-brainer to get replaced. He said there could be a serious problem with the front crankshaft oil seal, though, but damn if I just don't feel like dropping a thousand bucks to keep from leaking a quart every oil change.

Sirius, I can't trade my car in. I've modified half the shit in the engine bay; it's worthless to anyone except another VW enthusiast, and a patient one at that. Anyway, if you want advice for your B5, go to www.passatworld.com.

Careful with those...They've been replacing 3.6 engines left and right. Oil pump bolt backs its own way out and kaboom. Check VWvortex in the B6 passat forums for more info. I wanted one (drove one, and :eek3::eek3:) in a 4mo wagon, until I found out about this. My neighbor's Q7 just had the same problem.

I read a few threads about it over there before buying. Most of them that I read that had that problem, it did it in the first 12k miles or so. I'm at about 15k, and so far so good. :x: I couldn't pass up the performance and luxury for the price. For a four dour quasi-luxury car (mine has the luxury package with all the bells and whistles), that thing will get up and go!

Did they seriously just design a brand-new engine and not think to make sure the bolt was threaded in the right direction to keep from backing out? Jesus fucking Christ. That's just inexcusable.

    I want an RX-8.

Possibly, I don't know the exact numbers. I know they were all called back to the dealers to have compression checks done, but I don't know how many actually failed the test.

Still, you gotta admit it looks real good on Mazda that they'd be willing to give every person with compression problems a new engine, free, no questions asked. Even if the engine is problematic, I'd want to buy a car from a company with that kind of customer service.

Yeah, I was (and still am) annoyed that they can't find a torque converter to use with the automagic gearbox that can withstand 9000rpms, because I do get stuck in traffic a lot and not having to feather the clutch would be nice, but I'll get a 6-speed if that's the only viable option.

For the record, though, the automagic version now has the same 3-intake-port engine that the 6-speed always had.

Just checking. The thread got a little off course for a bit.

These were taken with my shitty old camera. I have a nice one now, but now the weather's shitty instead.

It has the factory sport suspension (standard in Europe, "Driver Gear" here), that puts it about 3/4" lower than most Passats. I actually didn't know that when I bought it; I replaced the wheels and didn't see the "4x4 look" that a lot of other people had complained about, and only later found out from the mechanic that I didn't have the 4x4 look because the springs were shorter.
