Imagine a 10 x 10 grid, each cell has a value, say they are numbered from
1 to 100 in this grid. I want the grid to highlight all integer multiples
of the number in a given user-selected cell.

So if I pick the cell with the number 2, all even numbered cells will be
highlighted in pink while the cell I selected is highlighted in red; pick
7 and all multiples of 7 are highlighted in pink and the cell containing
    the value 7 is red.

now, let's say that my cells no longer have numbers but identifiers, say students in a class. when i pick a student i want all his/her friends' cells to light up plus that student's stats to be displayed.

Any idea where I can start?

hmm, i envisioned an interactive interface. preferably something speedy and lightweight? flash was what i had imagined. but i can learn any language/platform OT feels best suited to the task.

right. let's say that my cells no longer have numbers but identifiers, say students in a class. when i pick a student i want all his/her friends' cells to light up plus that student's stats to be displayed.

do i really need an all out database?

    oh SNAP!

what if my highlighting function isn't just multiples but a table look-up? like a school of kids and i want to look up a selected kid's siblings within the same school?

is there a name for this sort of interface? i'm hoping to make it look snappy and engaging. the target users are biologists - very visual creatures.

    cool.

change in plans, though. the table i'd need would be 100 x 100 and i cannot fit all the data on a screen...so now i'm thinking of something like this: http://www.nndc.bnl.gov/chart/

chart is interactive, but mine will be a two-axis chart: 1 line graph and the other a bar chart. click on a bar and get the table below to update.

    any idea on layout?

i've been poking around that site with the firefox webdev extension...
